Magnetization reversal of Co/Cr multilayer films is studied by utilizing initial magnetization curves, minor loops, isothermal and dc demagnetization remanence curves, and temperature dependence of the loops. Electron microscope observations reveal that the films consist of columnar grains of size from 400 to 800 A(ring). It is suggested that the magnetization reversal is dominated by rotation of single-domain grains. Numerical calculations are performed based on the Stoner–Wohlfarth coherent rotation model for noninteracting, single-domain particles of uniaxial anisotropy. The calculated results agree qualitatively with the experimental results. To investigate the quantitative differences, magnetic interactions among the grains are measured in terms of deviations from the linear Hankel plot predicted by Wohlfarth.

It is well known that the Cr underlayer plays a critical role in generating large in-plane coercivity in Co-based magnetic thin films. In this paper we report in detail the Co-Sm (1¯100)[0001]//Cr (1¯21¯)[1¯01] epitaxy revealed by high resolution electron microscopy. The lattice mismatch between Co-Sm (1¯100) and Cr (1¯21¯) is less than 2%, suggesting an energetically favorable configuration. The high anisotropy observed in Co-Sm films is discussed by this epitaxial relation. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Sm-Co film is a potential candidate for the future high density recording media of 10 Gb/in2 which requires bit sizes of the order of 300 nm and grain sizes of about 10 nm. This article investigates the microstructure of the Cr underlayer in Sm-Co thin films and its effect on Sm-Co thin films prepared by the dc magnetron sputtering technique. The grain size of the Cr underlayer is found to be about 25 nm. Grains with small angle misorientation usually form local agglomerates. Studies by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) bright field images at different defocus settings and by high resolution electron microscopy indicate that a large proportion of the grain boundaries have gaps. The gap width (about 1–3 nm) varies from place to place. The Sm-Co films deposited on the Cr underlayer inherit similar gaps at positions adjacent to the grain boundary gaps of the Cr underlayer. Such gaps produce grain-like contrast of about 25 nm in TEM bright field images. However, such contrast becomes weak as the thickness of the film increases and disappears at a thickness of 96 nm, suggesting the gaps are sealed at places far from the Cr underlayer. The effect of the Cr underlayer on magnetic properties are discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Single crystals of the black 1:2 donor–acceptor complex of phenothiazine with pyromellitic dianhydride, PTZ:(PMDA)2, were grown by plate sublimation at ∼163 °C from the zone-refined components. The l:1 complex is produced at lower temperatures. Crystals of the 1:2 complex are monoclinic, P21/c, Z=4, a=7.689(3), b=12.953(5), c=28.14(2) A(ring), β=104.30(2)° at T=19 °C. The structure was refined from 2863 x-ray diffraction reflection intensities for which I〉2.0σ(I) to R=0.064 and Rw=0.057. The structure consists of continuous ... DADA ... polar stacks as does the l:1 complex, but the stacks, which are parallel to the a axis, are separated in the c direction by the extra PMDA molecule. The overlap of adjacent molecules in the stack in the 1:2 complex is more closely related to the overlap of adjacent molecules in the π-molecular complex of PMDA with anthracene. The resultant angle between the stack axis and the normal to the planar molecules is 27.1°. The geometry of the individual molecules in the l:2 complex is not significantly different from those in the l:1 complex.

Abstract. The specificity and kinetics of the immune response of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) to single injections of an O-antigen extracted from the bacterial pathogen Yersinia ruckeri, which causes enteric redmouth in fish, were investigated by the passive haemolytic plaque assay and serum antibody quantitation. Doses ranging from 5 ng to 500 mg in 10-fold increments were injected intraperitoneally into groups of trout held at 17 × 1°5°C. The occurrence of plaque forming cells (PFC) and humoral antibody was followed for 35 days after injection. Trout gave an immune response to doses of 500 ng and above. Seven days after injection no humoral antibody was detected, but PFC were found in the spleen. The maximum PFC numbers occurred 11 days after injection. On day 21, few PFC were found, whereas serum antibody titres were highest. The antibody from immunized trout showed little or no cross-reactions with sheep red blood cells passively labelled With antigens from other fish pathogens.
