Abstract The feasibility of utilizing liquid scintillation counting as a detection method for the liquid chromatographic analysis of99Tc is evaluated. The chemical quenching of constituents commonly found in liquid chromatographic mobile phases is investigated, and quench corrections are presented. Quantification of99Tc is achieved over a concentration range of 10−3 to 10−8M on quiescent KTCO4 solutions, with sample volumes of 0.3 ml, yielding a counting efficiency from 51 to 59% for a narrow 150 channel window. The potential for the double isotope labelling of technetium complexes and the implications of the liquid scintillation counting of99Tc in flowing eluents are discussed.

Abstract Negative Ion Fast Atom Bombardment Mass Spectrometry is conducted on potassium pertechnetate evaporated onto a copper probe. The mass spectra of pertechnetate /TcO 4 − / reveal the presence of mononuclear and polynuclear technetium oxo species which form general series TcnO n+1 − ,...TcnOn+4 with n=1 to 5. The polynuclear species are believed to be formed via gas phase reactions.

    Description / Table of Contents:

Abstract The arthropod parasites and predators ofAcraea terpsicore (L.) were determined in the forest zone of Ghana. An unidentified mite was predatory on the very young larvae. The pentatomidsPlatynopus rostratus Dru. andMacrorhaphis acuta (Dall.) were also predatory on the larvae.Telenomus sp. parasitized the eggs. The tachinidCarcelia normula (Curran) and the ichneumonidCharops diversipes Roman were parasitic on the larvae.C. diversipes was hyperparasitized by the chalcididBrachymeria feae Masi and the eulophidPediobius taylori Kerrich. Laboratory tests showed that parasitism ofA. terpsicore byC. diversipes was significantly highest in the 1st instar, followed by the 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The 5th instar was not parasitized. These results seemed to reflect both host susceptibility and parasite preference. Only a singleC. diversipes larva developed in a host. The developmental period of the parasite egg and larva varied inversely with the age of the host at which it was parasitized. A femaleC. diversipes could oviposit immediately after emergence.
