ISSN: 1573-4803Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision MechanicsNotes: Abstract The packing density of irregular shaped particles greatly affects the properties of highly filled particulate composite materials. The effects of particle size distribution parameters on the packing density of fused silica powder and cristobalite flour powder of different size ranges is reported. Various size distributions, according to the log-normal function, were prepared by sieving and characterized by light scattering, using a Malvern 2600 light scattering instrument. The apparent and tap density of the various powders was used to characterize the packing density. The size distribution width was found to have a major effect on the packing density. In addition, the particle size was found to affect the packing density however, its significance depends on the size range and shape of the particles. Mixtures of powders, each having a different size distribution, behave differently.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Pairs remained close to each other (usually within 20 m) during the pre-laying period, leaving little opportunity for EPCs to occur. Males and females both maintained physical proximity by approaching each other when they became separated. Copulations were obvious but infrequent, occurring about once every other day during the pre-laying period. Multilocus DNA fingerprinting was consistent with behavioral findings: 58 young from 47 different families were all genetic offspring of parents that raised them. Perfect genetic monogamy (genetic parentage of young by parents that rear them) in loons might arise as a consequence of the need for vigorous territorial defense to prevent territorial takeover.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
8Nonlinear viscoelastic response in two dimensions - numerical modeling and experimental verificationStaff View
ISSN: 0032-3888Keywords: Chemistry ; Chemical EngineeringSource: Wiley InterScience Backfile Collection 1832-2000Topics: Chemistry and PharmacologyMechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Production Engineering, Mining and Metallurgy, Traffic Engineering, Precision MechanicsPhysicsNotes: Recently we developed a nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive model which called the Phases Model (PHM) [10]. The main advantages of the PHM over existing nonlinear viscoelastic models are that it lends itself to simple, straightforward calibration of the material functions, and that it is naturally suitable to step-by-step computer simulation. In this paper we apply the PHM to two dimensional (2-D) situations. To this end, we've developed a 2-D finite difference code in cylindrical geometry which is based on the PHM. We demonstrate the validity of our modeling by applying the code to a 2-D set-up developed for this purpose. The 2-D specimen is in the form of a disc of the test material compressed between two rigid metal anvils by a velocity-controlled Instron machine. We monitor the response of the viscoelastic disc in terms of the overall axial force history, and the axial stress component at the disc center. We get good agreement between theory and experiment.Additional Material: 14 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
