ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Amorphous magnetostrictive films of the binary compound SmxFe1−x as well as of the ternary compound (TbyDy1−y)xFe1−x were prepared by rf or dc magnetron sputtering using either a multitarget arrangement with pure element targets or cast composite-type targets. The magnetostrictive properties of (Tb0.3Dy0.7)0.4Fe0.6 and Sm0.4Fe0.6 films were investigated in relation to their preparation conditions. Depending upon these conditions (especially upon the deposition rate, the bias voltage, and the Ar sputtering pressure) amorphous films with a giant magnetostriction of about 250 ppm (−220 ppm) at 0.1 T and 400 ppm (−300 ppm) at 0.5 T for the TbDyFe (SmFe) and an in-plane magnetic easy axis could be prepared. In view of applications in microsystem technologies (e.g., pumps, valves, positioning elements) these films have been tested in a simple cantilever arrangement and the predicted deflection of a magnetostrictive actuated membrane has been calculated.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1420-908XKeywords: Key words: Dapsone metabolites — LTB4— Polymorphonuclear leukocytes — Skin — ChemotaxisSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract. Objective: Dapsone (4,4'diaminodiphenylsulfone) is effective in treating leprosy, chronic inflammatory conditions and opportunistic infections in HIV patients. By the oral route, the sulfone is metabolized to monoacetyldapsone (MADDS) and dapsone hydroxylamine (DDS-NOH). We have addressed the question as to whether these dapsone metabolites have anti-inflammatory properties of their own in vivo.¶Treatment and Methods: After two weeks topical pre-treatment with MADDS (1%), DDS-NOH (1%) and clobetasol proprionate (CP; 0.05%) dissolved in acetone, as a reference, 10 ng leukotriene B4 (LTB4) were applied on the upper arms of eight healthy volunteers. After 24 h, biopsies were taken and the polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) were quantified fluorometrically using elastase as marker enzyme.¶Results: MADDS did not show any inhibitory activity on trafficking of PMN compared to the corresponding control and nontreated area (untreated: 790 ± 450 PMN/10 μg skin; p 〉 0.05, acetone: 840 〉 578 PMN/10 μg skin; MADDS: 1099 〉 556 PMN/10 μg skin), whereas DDS-NOH caused a statistically significant inhibition of PMN accumulation as did the reference CP (DDS-NOH: 128 〉 143 PMN/10 μg skin; CP: 86 〉 131 PMN/10 μg skin, p 〈 0.01).¶Conclusions: These results indicate that DDS-NOH has anti-inflammatory potential which might contribute to the effectiveness of dapsone therapy.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

This pilot study of 10 human follicular carcinomas and 10 folliculars adenomas demonstrates the possibility of a cytological classification using digital picture processing of high resolution cell images. Giemsa stained paraplast sections were scanned with a Colour-TV-camera, different channels were used with respect to staining and analyzing methods and computed with an image processing system. The computer aided cytophotometric methods detected significant differences in the chromatin arrangement and structure.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-0711Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Zusammenfassung Zwischen Januar 1987 und Dezember 1991 wurden insgesamt 98 Mammakarzinomrezidive bzw. Lymphknotenmetastasen diagnostiziert. Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1434-6036Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract We consider a (band) electron-LO phonon system described by an anisotropic Fröhlich Hamiltonian. By means of functional integration techniques, the phonon terms can be eliminated exactly, leading to an effective one-particle problem. The (formal) free energy of this effective system is investigated. We clarify its asymptotic behaviour (that is the small- and large-coupling regime) and present Monte-Carlo results for the ground-state energy in the intermediate region. Finally, a comparison is drawn with previous work.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1434-6036Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract We propose a specially adapted perturbational scheme to calculate the energies and weve functions of excitons in a homogeneous magnetic fieldB. The strength ofB is arbitrary. In contrast to involved variational calculations, our final results are entirely analytical and may serve as a starting point for further applications. As for the energies, we find good agreement with previous work. Moreover we show that the well-known small-B and large-B asymptotics for the exact eigenvalues areboth contained in our unifying formulas as limiting cases.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
