    Description:
Public participation is a common element in state-of-the-art urban development projects. Tailoring the public participation process to the local context is a popular strategy for ensuring sufficient turnout and meaningful engagement, but this strategy faces several challenges. Through a review of case studies of public participation in urban development projects, we identify ten typical misalignments between the public participation process and the local context, including the lack of policy maker support, adverse personal circumstances of participants, low collaborative capacity, and mistrust, among others. When a public participation process is not aligned to the local context, the process may generate outcomes that compromise public interests, inequitably distribute benefits among stakeholders, or favor powerful private interests. This study offers caution and guidance to planning practitioners and researchers on how to contextualize public participation in urban development projects through the categorization of common misalignments that ought to be avoided.

    Description:
Web 2.0 platforms have become a ubiquitous way of information exchange, but are seldom integrated with the Web of Data. To overcome this situation we propose the usage of SKOS thesauri acting as back-of-the-book index providing domain-specific axes transcending applications. We illustrate this concept with a use-case in the social sciences domain but applications in other domains are possible. (author's abstract)

    Description:
This article addresses regional features of the food sector in Russia's subnational territories. The diverse geographic and climatic characteristics as well as policy measures during the socialist era have resulted in specialised patterns of agricultural production. Under central planning regional demand and supply of food products was balanced by public intervention. With the beginning of the transition period the federal Russian government lost power and lacked financial means to continue this balancing mechanism. The regionalisation of policy-making increased the sovereignty of the subnational units in Russia. Today many of the regions pursue strategies of autarky and self-sufficiency and have implemented corresponding agricultural and food policies. Against the background, the evolving patterns of the food economy in Russia's regions are analysed quantitatively. We use a set of socio-economic indicators as well as food supply and demand variables to identify regional classes. Cluster analysis and discriminant analysis are applied to test the significance of the chosen variables for the group composition. The resulting classification focuses on relationships between agricultural sector performance and the welfare situation of households. It highlights that policy increasingly matters for regional diversity: first, different agricultural and food policies at the oblast level change the relative position of the regions in terms of food sector performance; second, the administrative status of a region (oblast versus autonomous region or republic) has an impact on the performance of the food sector in the region. We conclude, that the transition period has increased the disintegration of food markets and therefore the regional heterogeneity of the food sector in Russia.

    Description:
As more and more people use social media to communicate their view and perception of elections, researchers have increasingly been collecting and analyzing data from social media platforms. Our research focuses on social media communication related to the 2013 election of the German parliament [translation: Bundestagswahl 2013]. We constructed several social media datasets using data from Facebook and Twitter. First, we identified the most relevant candidates (n=2,346) and checked whether they maintained social media accounts. The Facebook data was collected in November 2013 for the period of January 2009 to October 2013. On Facebook we identified 1,408 Facebook walls containing approximately 469,000 posts. Twitter data was collected between June and December 2013 finishing with the constitution of the government. On Twitter we identified 1,009 candidates and 76 other agents, for example, journalists. We estimated the number of relevant tweets to exceed eight million for the period from July 27 to September 27 alone. In this document we summarize past research in the literature, discuss possibilities for research with our data set, explain the data collection procedures, and provide a description of the data and a discussion of issues for archiving and dissemination of social media data.

    Description:
"Assessing political conversations in social media requires a deeper understanding of the underlying practices and styles that drive these conversations. In this paper, we present a computational approach for assessing online conversational practices of political parties. Following a deductive approach, we devise a number of quantitative measures from a discussion of theoretical constructs in sociological theory. The resulting measures make different - mostly qualitative - aspects of online conversational practices amenable to computation. We evaluate our computational approach by applying it in a case study. In particular, we study online conversational practices of German politicians on Twitter during the German federal election 2013. We find that political parties share some interesting patterns of behavior, but also exhibit some unique and interesting idiosyncrasies. Our work sheds light on (i) how complex cultural phenomena such as online conversational practices are amenable to quantification and (ii) the way social media such as Twitter are utilized by political parties." Description:
Open science practices have been widely discussed and have been implemented with varying success in different disciplines. We argue that computational-x disciplines such as computational social science, are also susceptible to the symptoms of the crises, but in terms of reproducibility. We expand the binary definition of reproducibility into a tier system which allows increasing levels of reproducibility based on external verifiability to counteract the practice of open-washing. We provide solutions for barriers in Computational Social Science that hinder researchers from obtaining the highest level of reproducibility, including the use of alternate data sources and considering reproducibility proactively.

    Description:
