    Description:
The challenges of building relations between two different civilizations, which Samuel Huntington and Lev Gumilev wrote about, are currently becoming more obvious due to the cardinal geopolitical and geoeconomic changes that have taken place since the demise the USSR and the world socialist system. Today, in the West, as if in contrast to the famous project by Charles de Gaulle —“Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals”, an extremely negative image of Russia is being formed. Western ideologists stick to the axiom according to which despotism and slavery, allegedly being the basis of Russia's internal order, inevitably give rise to aggression in relations with the outside world. Of course, these ideas do not take into account the ongoing socio-economic changes in the country and have little to do with modern realities. They are a mere reproduction of the old Western xenophobic moods going back to the time when Russophobia was widely spread in a number of leading European countries. The article explores historical roots of Russophobia and their manifestations at the beginning of the XXI century in Poland and the Baltic countries.

Abstract When activated by Et2AlCl phosphine-containing homogeneous nickel complexes and their heterogenized analogs (HMC) formed on silochrome S-120 modified by NH2 and N(PPh2)2 groups differ significantly in their effectiveness in ethylene dimerization. The catalytic activity of Ni-HMC-Et2AlCl depends on how the HMC was formed. Ni-HMC-I obtained by ligand exchange on chemically modified silochrome is ∼5–15 times more effective than Ni-HMC-II synthesized from the gas phase. The selectivity in formation of α-olefins (σC4 + σC6) is ∼4–5 times higher in the presence of Ni-HMC than for its homogeneous analogs.

Conditions for chaos onset due to the interaction of resonances in a weakly nonlinear oscillator with a quasiperiodic excitation are investigated. The focus is made on the interaction of the 1:1 resonance with that of 1:m, where m is an arbitrary integer number. Analytical conditions of the chaos arising are obtained through the combined application of the averaging procedure and Melnikov's technique. The comparison study of these conditions with those following from standard Chirikov's approach is provided. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract InGaAsP/InP laser heterostructures with two stressed quantum wells operating in the wavelength range 1.3–1.55 μm were obtained by VPE of organometallic compounds. An optical emission power of 2.4 W was reached for the laser diodes with 100-μm wide strips operated in the continuous lasing mode at 20°C. A minimum threshold current density was 260 A/cm2. A differential quantum efficiency ηd= 40% was obtained with a 1.9-mm-long Fabry-Perot resonator. The internal optical losses of the heterostructures are reduced to 2.6–4.2 cm−1.

Abstract InGaAsP/InP laser heterostructures with step-divergent waveguides and two stressed quantum wells were obtained by metalorganic VPE. The lasers emitting at 1.55 μm provide for an intrinsic quantum yield of ηi=85%. An optical power of 5.2 W in the continuous operation mode was achieved at a laser diode temperature of 10°C. The internal optical losses in the laser heterostructure studied amount to 3.6 cm−1, which is comparable with the level of losses in similar structures with uniform divergent waveguides.

Abstract A methodology has been developed for growing InGaAsP/InP multiwell laser heterostructures by liquid-phase epitaxy. Depth profiling using a secondary ion mass spectrometer was used to investigate the distribution profiles of the composition of multiwell laser heterostructures. Liquid-phase epitaxy was used to fabricate InGaAsP/InP multiwell laser heterostructures with active regions having emission wavelengths of 1.3 and 1.55 μm and their radiative characteristics were studied.

Abstract An investigation was made of the anisotropic properties of Fe films obtained by molecular-beam epitaxy on GaAs(100) substrates. It is shown that at thicknesses t=40–50 Å the Fe films begin to exhibit cubic magnetic anisotropy. At thicknesses t〉100 Å the first constant of cubic anisotropy K1 has values similar to those for “bulk” Fe single crystals. Films of intermediate thickness 50〈t〈100 Å possess both isotropic and anisotropic phases.

Abstract Mesastripe single-mode InGaAsP/InP laser diode heterostructures with an optical emission power of 200 mW in the continuous lasing mode at two wavelengths (1.3 and 1.55 μm) were obtained by metalorganic VPE. In the samples with a mesastripe contact width of W=5 μm, the single-mode lasing regime was observed in the entire range of pumping currents. For a cavity length of 1.0–2.5 mm, the threshold current densities varied within 450–600 A/cm2. The differential quantum efficiency reached 30–40%. The internal optical losses in the mesastripe laser heterostructures are reduced to 7.7 cm−1. The output power-pumping current characteristics of control samples remained unchanged upon testing for 1500 h at 50°C.

Abstract A study is made of the electrical, optical, and structural properties of Si:Er layers produced by sublimation molecular-beam epitaxy. The Er and O contents in the layers, grown at 400–600°C, were as high as 5×1018 and 4×1019 cm−3, respectively. The electron concentration at 300 K was ∼10% of the total erbium concentration and the electron mobility was as high as 550 cm2/(V·s). Intense photoluminescence at 1.537 µm was observed from all the structures up to 100–140 K. The structure of the optically active centers associated with Er depended on the conditions under which the layers were grown.

Abstract Wide-mesastripe InGaAsP/InP heterostructure lasers emitting at 1.3–1.5 µm were grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Radiation-power-current and spectral characteristics of the lasers have been studied in pulsed and continuous wave (cw) operation in the temperature range of 10–60°C. The temperature of the active region of the diode laser is higher by 30–60°C than that of the copper heatsink upon saturation of the cw output power. The temperature dependence of the differential quantum efficiency strongly affects the cw output power. Output powers of 3 and 2.6 W are achieved in mesastripe lasers in cw operation, and 9 and 6.5 W in pulsed operation, at wavelengths of 1.3 and 1.5 µm, respectively.

Abstract The results are presented that are obtained from searches for and an investigation of isospin-two narrow resonances in the effective-mass spectrum of ppπ+ combinations originating from the reaction np → ppπ+π−π− induced by P n =5.20±0.13 GeV/c neutrons. Data subjected to our analysis come from the 1-m hydrogen bubble chamber installed at the Laboratory for High Energies, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna), and exposed to a beam of quasimonochromatic neutrons. Narrow structures in the effective-mass spectrum of ppπ+ combinations are found at 2175, 2221, 2321, 2398, 2471, 2525, 2596, and 2709 MeV/c 2. The experimental widths of the resonances are determined primarily by the instrumental resolution. The branching fractions for various channels through which the 2596-MeV/c 2 resonance decays are determined to be (83±23)% for the Δ 33 ++ p channel, (10±3)% for the (BB) 2095 ++ π+ channel, and (7 −7 +15 for the ppπ+ channel; here, (BB) 2095 ++ is a dibaryon in the two-proton system with a mass around 2095 MeV/c 2. A qualitative analysis of the spins of the 2596-and 2709-MeV/c 2 resonances is performed.

Abstract Microcrystals of mercuric iodide have been grown in a polymer matrix with pores 200 nm in diameter. The absorption and luminescence spectra indicate the formation of microcrystals of two (red and orange) modifications in the host matrix. The temperature dependence of the emission spectra and the evolution of absorption and emission spectra in the course of sample ageing have been studied. The evolution of the spectra is governed by the transition from the orange to red modification and the increase in size of microcrystals.

Abstract Polarization measurements in the A(p, 2p)B reactions on 6Li, 7Li, and 28Si nuclei at a proton-beam energy of 1 GeV were performed in a kinematically complete experiment. By using a two-arm magnetic spectrometer, two secondary protons were recorded in coincidence at asymmetric scattering angles of θ1=15°−26° and θ2=58.6° for residual-nucleus momenta in the range K B=0–150 MeV/c. Either arm of the spectrometer was equipped with polarimeters based on proportional chambers. The data coming from this experiment are analyzed within the distorted-wave impulse approximation. It is shown that the polarization of recoil protons formed at angle θ2 in the interaction featuring a proton from the P shell of the 7Li nucleus can be described under the assumption of an effective intranuclear-proton polarization by using the single-particle shell-model wave function of the nucleus. Our data on the polarizations of the two protons from the reaction (p, 2p) on a 28Si nucleus also suggest the effective polarization of the protons in the D shell of the 28Si nucleus. It is found that, for high recoil-nucleus momenta of K B≥90 MeV/c, the effective polarization of the protons in the P shell of the 6Li nucleus—this polarization was discovered in studying the polarization of recoil protons in the reaction 6Li(p, 2p)5He—cannot be described within the shell model assuming LS coupling. As might have been expected, the polarization of recoil protons knocked out from the S shells of the 6Li and 7Li nuclei comply well with the predictions obtained in the impulse approximation with allowance for the depolarization effect alone.

Abstract The effect of GaAs(001) surface roughness on the magnetic properties of MBE-grown Fe films having a thickness t in the interval from 12 to 140 Å is investigated by the ferromagnetic resonance method. The films were deposited at room temperature with rates of 9 and 3 Å/min. For films grown on substrates with the rms deviation of the roughness σ≈10 and 30 Å, the spectrum is essentially dependent on the relationship between t and σ. At t≤σ and t≥3σ, a single absorption line is observed, whereas at σ≤t≤3σ, two absorption lines are present. These features of the spectra are related to the island growth of the films and the influence of roughness on island coalescence.
