Production of the intense accelerated 48Ca ion beam is the key problem in the experiments on synthesizing of new heavy nuclei. For this purpose an axial injection system with the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR)-4M ion source was created for the U400 cyclotron. The task was to achieve an accelerated beam with an intensity of 0.5 pμA of 48Ca5+ at the 48Ca consumption of ∼0.5 mg/h. To solve this problem, a new method for the solid material feed into the ECR source was developed. The combination of a micro oven with a hot tantalum sheet inside the discharge chamber allowed the production of intense beams of ions of metals with relatively low melting point. The present article describes the method, technique, and experimental results on the production of 48Ca ion beam at the U-400 cyclotron from the ECR-4M ion source. The analysis of the working substance balance in the ion source including the ion beam extraction and material regeneration is performed. The analysis based on the experimental data has shown that the efficiency of Ca atom transformation into ion beam is close to that obtained for the gases such as Ar, and the intensity of 48Ca5+ constitutes about 20% of the extracted ion beam. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

[Auszug] The arrangement of the chemical elements in the periodic table highlights resemblances in chemical properties, which reflect the elements’ electronic structure. For the heaviest elements, however, deviations in the periodicity of chemical properties are expected: electrons in ...

Conclsuions The construction of an experimental model for studying MHD energy conversion from a pulsed thermonuclear reactor is a realistic technical task at the present time. Doing this would permit development of a large scale MHD generator module for the typical parameters of the heated working medium in a pulsed thermonuclear reactor. In principle it is possible to obtain an efficiency of at least about 40% with a linear plasma MHD generator. The efficiency of the whole plant might be increased further by utilization of the thermal energy at the outlet of the MHD channel in traditional methods. When such an MHD generator is built difficulties with the behavior of supersonic plasma streams undergoing strong velocity reduction in a channel and the associated gasdynamic problems can clearly be solved successfully by active modification of the boundary layer and appropriate profiling of the MHD channel. Some complications may arise if a regime with time varying magnetic braking is used. Also important is the problem of the behavior of the plasma stream at large magnetic Reynolds numbers (Rem∼1). The basic technological problems are these: materials for the MHD channel, cooling arrangements for the channel (especially the critical cross section of the flow path), and pumping off the boundary layer at the electrodes and preventing lithium condensation on the channel walls. Because of the small magnetic field required, construction of the magnet system will clearly not present substantial technical difficulties associated with its size. The most important physical questions as well as a number of technological questions characteristic of this problem may be investigated on a fairly simple model MHD generator with an output power level of 300–500 MW, a pulse duration of 10–20 msec, and a lithium plasma source.

Abstract Equations and boundary and initial conditions of radionuclide transfer in disperse media are formulated taking into account diffusion, radioactive decay, adsorption, and convective transfer. Particular solutions of the system of equations under consideration are obtained in the case of linear Henry sorption isotherm and at constant diffusion coefficients and flow velocity. The problems are extended to the case of linear and inhomogeneous media for given sorption equations and transfer coefficients.

Abstract A model is presented for heat and mass transfer in a flowing dissociating liquid in a rod bundle. The temperature pattern in the liquid and in a heat-producing rod has been determined from the general solutions to the conduction equations for rods and shells.

Abstract The architecture of the controlling computer assembly (CCA) of the “Del'fin” facility, the apparatus, and the software of the system are considered. The apparatus of the “supply” automation system controls the energy supply to the amplifier module on the basis of a capacitor bank with 2.5-mJ energy. The elemental base of the “adjustment” automation subsystem is developed. It includes the mounts for the mirrors actuated by stepper motors (SM), the drivers of the stepper motors, the optical heads with coordinate-sensitive receivers, logic blocks, and other elements. The trends in the development of CCA and of automation subsystems are considered.

Abstract The distribution of the phases and amplitudes of the static pressure fluctuations with self-oscillations of an underexpanded jet flowing into a barrier is obtained experimentally in the present paper. The distribution of the Mach number in the compressed layer and in the subsonic flow in front of the barrier is shown. The results of the measurements of the characteristics of the self-oscillation process are discussed.
