ISSN: 1437-2320Keywords: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ; electromyography ; foramen magnum ; meningiomaSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, degenerative disease of the nervous system. It affects adults in all age groups and leads to death few years after the diagnosis. The etiology is unknown, and there no convincing medical or surgical therapy. Some diseases can mimic ALS. If diagnosed early these may be treatable, but if misdiagnosed as ALS and left untreated they may be fatal. We present a case of foramen magnum meningioma presenting clinically as ALS. After surgery, the symptoms disappeared and the neurological deficits improved.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 0942-0940Keywords: Brain tumour ; adenosine deaminase ; serumSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary Adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity in serum was estimated in 86 patients with intracranial tumours and 40 healthy volunteers. Although high ADA concentrations in biological fluids and tumour tissues were observed in several neoplastic conditions, there was no significant difference in the ADA in sera of brain tumour patients when compared to the control values. Therefore, cell-mediated immunity probably does not play a significant role in brain tumours.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 0942-0940Keywords: Brain tumour ; immunoglobulin ; serumSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary Immunoglobulin level in the sera of 62 patients with intracranial space occupying lesions was assayed using the radial immunodiffusion method. Serum IgM levels showed a highly significant increase in all types of brain tumour when compared to controls. Serum IgG levels were also increased in benign as well as malignant cases. Serum IgA levels were high only in benign cases. Hence, increased serum Ig levels may be of prognostic value in these cases.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 0942-0940Keywords: Brain tumour ; immune complexes ; serumSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary The levels of circulating immune complexes (CIC) were assayed in the sera of 109 patients with intracranial space occupying lesions. The CIC levels were significantly increased in all the brain tumours. After treatment, the CIC levels were still significantly increased when compared to the controls but showed no change when compared to their respective pre-operative values. Further, no change was observed in the CIC levels between the malignant and benign tumour case. Moreover, in brain tumours, 90% of the CIC precipitate consisted of IgG. However, the CIC levels fail to prognosticate the process of the disease in these patients.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Notes: A group of phenolic antioxidants was synthesized, characterized and the performance of these antioxidants in polymer processing was tested in the polymer melt by multiple extrusions. The change in melt flow was observed and compared with the change in melt flow by use of commercially available antioxidants. All the antioxidants examined had the same phenolic stabilization moiety but varied in the size of the substituents in the para-position of the aromatic ring. Increasing length of the side chain considerably influences the behaviour of the antioxidants in the polymer and thus their effectiveness.Additional Material: 3 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Antioxidants protect polymers through the severe conditions of processing and fabrication and also through end use. Small amounts of antioxidants like 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol and 2[(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)methylenel]-hydrazine carbothioamide are shown to be effective in protecting isotactic polypropylene (IPP) against thermooxidative degradation. 2[3,5-Di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-methylene]hydrazine carbothioamide was melt compounded with IPP using a twin screw extruder. The melt flow index of the extruded sample was measured. The extruded granules were injection molded to get specimens suitable for testing mechanical properties, such as heat deflection temperature, Izod impact strength, tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, and flexural modulus. 2[(3,5-Di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)methylene]hydrazine carbothioamide was found to be an effective melt stabilizer for unstabilized polypropylene. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.Additional Material: 8 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 0020-7608Keywords: Computational Chemistry and Molecular Modeling ; Atomic, Molecular and Optical PhysicsSource: Wiley InterScience Backfile Collection 1832-2000Topics: Chemistry and PharmacologyNotes: The structure and conformational stability of polythionylphosphazenes is investigated by modeling single polymer chains with small mimics. The model compounds are composed of repeat units of the corresponding polythionylphosphazenes. Two of the model compounds have hydrogens and two have chlorines as substituents on phosphorus atoms. The substituents on sulfur may be either fluorine or chlorine. Fully geometry-optimized structures and energies of the stable conformations involving rotations around the P—N bond near the sulfur are obtained using the density functional theory method. The structural and conformational analyses indicate that the rotation around the N—P bond leads to variations in the bond lengths, the SNP bond angle openings, as well as couplings between dihedral angles in different conformations in all model compounds. In addition, the conformational analysis suggests that the minima on the conformational potential energy surface in these compounds may be located in the vicinity of the following values of the NP—NS dihedral angle: -50°, 90° (or 60°), 180°, and 240°. It was found that the values of the conformational energy differences range between less than 1 to 5 kcal/mol. A comparison is made between the structural results obtained using the density functional theory and the ab initio molecular orbital theory for the global minimum structures. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.Additional Material: 11 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
