Published 1995Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: A technique has been developed to determine the absolute single particle counting efficiency of a channel electron multiplier (CEM) for positively charged ions at keV energies. The calibration technique is applicable to positive ion detectors in general. Ion beam currents of C2+ were created by charge transfer of C3+ on H2 in the thin target regime. By adjusting the H2 pressure in the beam scattering chamber from 10−10 to 10−6 Torr, C2+ currents could be created either low enough to be detected by the CEM in the particle counting mode or high enough to be measured as a current using the CEM as a Faraday cup. The CEM counting efficiency was determined by comparing the C2+ count rate to the C2+ current, scaling by the change in H2 pressure, and also scaling by the incident C3+ current for each C2+ measurement. This method, which effectively uses the charge transfer cross section as a "transfer standard,'' allows the CEM counting efficiency to be determined in situ and to be monitored accurately over extended periods of time. The calibration requires that only the relative, not the absolute, pressure change be known. The technique does not require the value of the charge transfer cross section to be known. The accuracy of the calibration technique for the present results was 10% at a confidence level considered to be equivalent to a statistical 90% confidence level. For the present work, the peak counting efficiency of a Galileo 4039 CEM for 32.5 keV C2+ ions was determined to be 96%. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The collision products, a photon and a lower-charge-state ion, are detected in delayed coincidence. Measurements of dielectronic recombination in C3+ are described to illustrate the use of the apparatus and techniques. Verification of the calibrations and operation of the apparatus is demonstrated through measurements of charge transfer and electron impact excitation.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1997Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We present detailed images of the Rb polarization in a high-pressure optical pumping cell. Images taken at high magnetic field strengths ((approximate)37 G) yield precise information on the relative occupation probability of the hyperfine Zeeman sublevels. Low-field (≤4 G) images yield very high resolution (less than 1 mm) maps of the spatial distribution of the Rb polarization. For optical pumping in the presence of high-pressure buffer gases, the measured populations of the hyperfine magnetic sublevels are shown to be well described by a spin temperature, even though the Rb–Rb spin exchange rate is much smaller than the rates of optical pumping or electron-randomizing Rb–Xe collisions in the buffer gas. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2002Staff ViewISSN: 1600-0536Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Contact dermatitis shows significant interindividual variation. We studied the relationship between an individual's irritant threshold and the elicitation of experimentally induced allergic sensitization. The results suggest that there is an association between reactivity to an irritant and the likelihood of positive elicitation reactions to lower hapten concentrations. This novel finding would be compatible with the proposal that contact allergy is best explained using a danger model with cutaneous irritancy determining sensitization. However, the enhanced allergic reactivity of individuals with a lower irritant threshold was not apparent on visual inspection, suggesting that the determinants of skin reactivity to haptens are multifactorial.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2003Staff ViewISSN: 1747-6593Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Energy, Environment Protection, Nuclear Power EngineeringNotes: Low-flow frequency analysis techniques are robust only where the flow record is relatively long and the flow regime is known to be stationary over time. If applied to short-period flow records. low-flow frequency analysis can give poor or misleading results. This paper examines the effectiveness of data-transfer methods for improving the characterisation of low-flow frequency relationships for gauged sites with flow records of less than fifteen years. Two transfer methods were considered. In each case the sequence of annual minimum flows from an analogue catchment was used to provide extra information about the sequence of flows at the site of interest. Transposing the standardised probability distribution function of annual minima between analogue sites worked where their flow records were highly correlated. However, better results were obtained where recurrence intervals for observations at the subject site were estimated from recurrence intervals for the same years in the analogue record.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
