Magnetic measurements have been performed on silver clad Tl-1223 and Tl-2223 tapes and a Tl-1223 single crystal to study the critical current properties of these samples. The Tl-1223 tape is shown by both magnetic and transport experiments to exhibit a highly granular nature, much more severe than that seen in the Tl-2223 tape, and in Bi-2223 tapes fabricated by similar rolling and pressing techniques. This characteristic is explained in terms of the poor grain alignment in the Tl-1223 tape resulting from the spherical morphology of Tl-1223 powders, in contrast with the micaceous and easily aligned Bi-2223 and Bi-2212 materials. However, evidence of a small number of strong intergrain links which remain superconducting at 77 K and 8 T is clear. The Tl-1223 single crystal exhibits clear anisotropic behavior, and this, together with the lack of good crystallographic alignment in the tapes is used to explain the variations in irreversibility line behavior between sample forms. The ratio of the irreversibility fields measured with field parallel and perpendicular to the ab plane is approximately 8. A clear "fish tail'' feature is also observed in magnetic hysteresis curves obtained from the Tl-1223 single crystal. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Transport critical current measurements have been carried out on melt-processed thick films of YBa2Cu3O7−δ on yttria-stabilized zirconia in fields of up to 8 T both within grains and across grain boundaries. These measurements yield Jc values of ∼3000 A cm−2 at 4.2 K and zero magnetic field and 400 A cm−2 at 77 K and zero magnetic field, taking the entire sample width as the definitive dimension. Optical and scanning electron microscopy reveals that the thick-film grains consist typically of a central "hub'' region ∼50 μm in diameter, which is well connected to radial subgrains or "spokes'' which extend ∼1 mm to define the complete grain structure. Attempts have been made to correlate the transport measurements of inter- and intra-hub-and-spoke (H-S) critical current with values of this parameter derived previously from magnetization measurements. Analysis of the transport measurements indicates that current flow through H-S grains is constrained to paths along the spokes via the grain hub. Taking the size of the hub as the definitive dimension yields an intra-H-S grain Jc of ∼60 000 A cm−2 at 4.2 K and 0 T, which is in reasonable agreement with the magnetization data. Experiments in which the hub is removed from individual grains confirm that this feature determines critically the Jc of the film.

Mucus-like secretions by Spirostomum are demonstrated by a combination of anatomic and hydrodynamic technics whereby the presence of mucocysts and trails formed by their secretions can be shown. The mucocysts in this heterotrich differ somewhat in form and content from those reported for hymenostomes. It is suggested that the mucuslike secretions aid in lubrication when the ciliate swims near a solid boundary and reduce unsteady hydrodynamic effects when the organism swims in unobstructed fluid.

Summary α-Chlorohydrin (I) is oxidatively metabolized to β-chlorolactic acid (III) and oxalic acid (IV). Deposition of calcium oxalate within the renal tubules is responsible for the toxic effects ofα-chlorohydrin and a similar action on the epididymis or epididymal blood vessels could initiate the formation of spermatocoeles from this and other male antifertility agents.

Summary The male antifertility agent 1-amino-3-chloropropan-2-ol (ACP,I) has been shown to be metabolized toα-chlorohydrin (III) and metabolites ofα-chlorohydrin. This accounts for the similar antifertility and renal toxicity effects of both compounds.

Summary Preparations of the enzymes glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and triosephosphate isomerase are shown to be inhibited bya-chlorohydrin phosphate (II) in a competitive and non-competitive manner, respectively.a-Chlorohydrin (I), glycidol and epi-chlorohydrin have no inhibitory activities suggesting that their antifertility actions are due to their metabolism in vivo toa-chlorohydrin phosphate.

Abstract Samples were taken by diver-held corer at Lizard I., northern Great Barrier Reef, to investigate community organization and to relate community and sedimentary variables. Cluster analysis grouped the finest-sediment sites together and isolated a single mangrove site. Other site-groupings were more heterogeneous and supplementary analyses supported an individualistic continuum interpretation. Sites were also classified with respect to sediments. The finest-sediment site-group had significantly fewer species than coarser site-groups and a significant correlation existed between species richness and median phi. Species richness and evenness were positively related but the more variable sediments did not support more species. No relationship between number of individuals and sediments was apparent.
