DAFS (diffraction anomalous fine structure) measurements give intensity variations of x-ray Bragg reflections as the energy is tuned near an absorption edge of an atom of the sample. In this way, the long-range structural information contained in the diffraction peak is combined with the chemical and local structure selectivity of x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Generally, for such experiments diffraction intensities are measured using classical monochromatic optics. In this report, we propose a new energy/angular "dispersive diffraction'' setup which allows a parallel intensity collection over the whole energy range. This method was demonstrated on a hexaferrite single crystal where intensity variations of eight Bragg reflections have been measured at the Fe K edge over a spectral range of 250 eV. The same DAFS measurements were performed using double-crystal optics and we compare both results. This experiment was done on a sample where, for all reflections, contributions of different Fe sites are mixed. An intensity analysis of these reflections, which was performed by a simultaneous refinement procedure of several reflections at all energies, is also given. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Six asymptomatic, non-smoking men with endoscopically proven duodenal ulcer disease received single nocturnal doses of placebo, 40 mg famotidine and 300 mg ranitidine each for 1 week prior to serial measurement of pH, peptic activity and serum gastrin concentrations over 24 h and of acid output. The intragastric pH fluctuated between 1.53 and 5.07 when subjects were given placebo but within 2 h of taking famotidine or ranitidine it rose to 5.57 or higher; the effect lasted for 12 h from midnight. Peptic activity fell during famotidine and ranitidine treatment and the decline was somewhat greater 8–15 h after using famotidine. Serum gastrin levels did not change materially with any treatment. The study shows the equivalent effect of standard bed-time doses of famotidine and ranitidine on intragastric pH, acid output and serum gastrin concentrations in asymptomatic men with duodenal ulcer disease.

    Notes:
Abstract Specific apolipoprotein E alleles have been associated in the last few years with several diseases using appropriate controls. However, these control groups are rarely representative of the general population since they correspond either to aged or healthy control groups (and thus depleted of pathological alleles). For this reason it is difficult at present to compare population allelic frequencies in different countries. In order to provide this essential basic data representative of the general population, in this work we have determined the distribution of apolipoprotein E alleles in 226 individuals from the population of Catalonia (Spain) sampled with the main purpose of paternity testing. The allelic frequencies are: ε2 = 0.064, ε3 = 0.810 and ε4 = 0.126, predicting a lower incidence of Alzheimer disease and possibly also of other pathologies where this allele is a risk factor.
