Published 1977Staff ViewISSN: 1471-0528Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: The reliability of eight methods for estimating gestational age in the third trimester of pregnancy has been assessed in patients with fetuses of known maturity. Late ultrasound cephalometry, amniotic fluid creatinine estimations and lecithin/ sphingomyelin ratio were found to be significantly more reliable than the other five methods. The mean of estimated gestational ages provided by the three techniques used in combination gave a significantly more accurate prediction of fetal age than any single test and allowed formation of a ‘maturity profile’.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

First, it accounts also for the unresolved discrepancy in the solar redshift at the limb; second, the average energy-loss parameter derived from the solar data can explain the galactic redshift anomalies in terms of variations ...Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The theoretical values obtained from their model are not consistent with the available experimental evidence. However, the ...Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-0428Keywords: Haemoglobin A1c ; Type 1 diabetes ; oxygen dissociation curve ; 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate ; p50Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary Increased erythrocyte 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate concentrations are associated with increased haemoglobin glycosylation in patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus who have no cause or symptoms of hypoxic stress. This change in 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate metabolism is additional to its response to changes in circulating haemoglobin concentration. Statistical analysis of data showed that erythrocyte 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate concentration did not correlate with the absolute concentration of circulating haemoglobin A1c, but with the proportion of haemoglobin glycosylated. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that it is changes in the position of the erythrocyte oxygen dissociation curve which modulate the increase in 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate synthesis upon haemoglobin A1c formation.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1978Staff ViewISSN: 1432-1041Keywords: Intramuscular Clindamycin Phosphate ; serum levels ; half-lives ; renal Failure ; haemodialysis ; manSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Chemistry and PharmacologyMedicineNotes: Summary Serum levels of clindamycin bioactivity and total clindamycin were studied after single intramuscular injections of 300 mg of clindamycin phosphate in a group of 6 normal subjects and a group of 6 maintenance haemodialysis patients. The patients were studied during a non-dialysis period and then again during haemodialysis. Peak levels tended to be higher and elimination half-lives shorter in the patients than in the normal subjects. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed. There was no evidence that haemodialysis per se influenced the pharmacokinetics of clindamycin phosphate. The proportion of unhydrolysed clindamycin phosphate tended to be higher in the renal failure patients and the reason for this is not apparent. Little, if any, dosage modification is necessary in severe renal failure although there is probably little point in exceeding a dose of 300 mg intramuscularly every 8 h even in severe infections in patients with severe renal failure. The higher peak levels in patients with advanced renal failure indicate the need for further studies with repeated doses.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Notes: Summary A woman underwent joint replacement surgery with prophylactic antibiotic cover, and subsequently died as a result of pseudomembranous colitis. We have noted a high incidence of antibiotic diarrhoea with cephradine, and suggest that if administration of prophylactic antibiotics is restricted to 3 days or less, the incidence of diarrhoea would diminish, and the therapeutic value of the antibiotics would be maintained.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
