We present a case of encephalitis due to Coxiella Burnetii with neuroradiologic findings on CT not described previously, consisting in areas of decreased absorption coefficient in the subcortical white matter of both hemispheres, predominantly in the right. Differential diagnosis must be established from viral encephalitis, of similar clinical presentation, which may show similar CT lesions to those in this case.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1992Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: The ionization of HCl by collision with metastable neon atoms has been studied in a crossed beam-mass spectrometric experiment in the thermal energy range. It was found that the ionization leads to HCl+, NeH+, and NeHCl+ ion products. The HCl+ ion is the main product. Its cross section shows a decreasing trend in the energy range investigated. The NeH+ cross section is about one order of magnitude lower and decreases with collision energy more rapidly than that of HCl+. The NeHCl+ ion is the minor product with a cross section decreasing dramatically with collision energy. The production of these ions can be explained as the result of the postionization dynamics of the two possible ionic complexes formed when the electron is ejected: the ground state [Ne⋅⋅⋅HCl+(X)] ionic complex dissociates into Ne+HCl+(X) or remains as a stable NeHCl+ ion; the excited [Ne⋅⋅⋅HCl+(A)] complex dissociates into Ne+HCl+(A) or reacts to NeH++Cl. The theoretical model used to analyze the experimental results gives a satisfactory qualitative account of the cross sections and of their collision energy dependence. The model combines the semiclassical treatment for Penning and associative ionization with the Langevin criterion for the ion–molecule reactions. It assumes a local complex spherical potential for the Ne*–HCl interaction, the probability for the formation of each of the four possible product ions, HCl+(X), HCl+(A), NeH+, and NeHCl+ being obtained from the distribution of electronic states, kinetic energy, angular momentum, and intermolecular distance of the two nascent [Ne⋅⋅⋅HCl+(X,A)] complexes formed when the electron is emitted by the system.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Improvement of detectors responsivity would serve to solve this problem and bolometers could be useful in studies of fast-developing phenomena in plasmas. We are searching for the development of new detectors based on a standard multilayer design and having as sensitive material amorphous germanium. The chosen detector structure is rigid substrate (low conductivity glass)/interdigitated electrodes (Ti-Au defined by photo- lithographic techniques)/resistor layer (amorphous oxygen-doped germanium evaporated by electron beam)/insulation layer (photo-CVD deposited Si3N4)/absorber foil (evaporated + electrolytic gold layers). The detector performance has been compared with pyroelectric detectors and germanium bolometers in the TJ-I tokamak under the same experimental conditions. Also, the design and construction of monolithic miniaturized detector arrays, based on this concept, are in progress.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1990Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: A microwave reflectometer has been used in the TJ-I tomakak (R=0.30 m, a=0.10 m, IpIp〈 50 kA, Bt 〈 1.5 T) to monitor density fluctuations in the plasma bulk. Experiments were made in the range 33–50 GHz, x mode. The system uses a single antenna for launching and receiving the microwave beam. Since broadband operation usually requires homodyne detection, different techniques were used to overcome the limitations due to this detection scheme. Radial profiles of the density turbulence were taken and the behavior of the spectra analyzed. A slow frequency sweeping has been performed to provide a method to normalize the signals reflected from different radial positions. In addition this technique can be used to obtain information on the absolute value of the phase oscillation amplitude. Spectra of the edge density fluctuations obtained by reflectometry and by Langmuir probes are compared. By the use of two reflectometers in the same antenna, radial correlation experiments can be performed. Some discussions on the ability of homodyne reflectometry to determine coherence lengths are also presented. A slow sweeping of the frequency is proposed to overcome the lack on the information given by the homodyne system.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1995Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: A modified tomography technique was developed to provide, from two radiation detector arrays covering an entire plasma cross section at a fixed toroidal angle, the local distribution of the time rate of change of the radiated power. The radiated power is the least unambiguously measured of all the components involved in plasma thermal equilibrium and its time evolution could be the most indicative of any perturbation of such equilibrium. The tomography technique has been checked by using simulated thermal perturbations, assuming a 1D transport model for the resulting transport. Experimental setups are presented for the TJ-I tokamak and TJ-IU stellarator. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The electrical conductivity of pig slurry suggests that addition of this waste to soils in arid and semi-arid areas could cause salinization. Changes in electrical conductivity and soluble salt concentration in two calcareous soils indicated a salinity risk after 24 months of pig slurry addition at rates of 400 m2/ha/yr or more. Salinity risk increased with soil water-holding capacity. Water-soluble potassium concentrations showed a greater increase than other cations in the soils because of the large amount present in the slurry. The proportion of soluble potassium in the soil depended on the soil's cation exchange capacity and on the composition of the clay fraction.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
