In this paper we propose a method of estimating multilateral regional price index numbers from a given household level data set on item-wise unit values/prices. The method is closely related to the Country-Product Dummy variable model of Summers (1973). This method is likely to be particularly useful in studies of regional comparisons of poverty and inequality, optimal commodity taxes and tax reforms. To illustrate the method, we use it to calculate the regional consumer price index numbers for Eastern, Western and Southern India (taking Northern India as the reference region) separately for three categories of rural and urban households, viz., all households and those below and above the poverty line, using household level unit records of the NSS 50th round (1993–94) Consumer Expenditure Survey.

The salt-tolerant varieties of rice (Oryza sativa L.) exhibit enhanced activity of the chloroplast form of L-myo-inositol 1-phosphate synthase (EC 5.5.4.1) under NaCl treatment either during the seedling stage or in fully grown plants during field growth. The salt-induced enhancement was noticeable only in chloroplasts from light-grown plants. The effects of these treatments on the cytosolic inositol synthase activity were less pronounced. While the effect of salt on the activity of the two forms was marginal in the salt-sensitive varieties during seedling growth, salinity affected the chloroplast inositol synthase activity adversely in these varieties during growth of the plants under field conditions. The salt-enhanced activities of inositol synthase(s) in the highly salt-tolerant varieties studied were found to be comparable to that observed in Porteresia coarctata, a halophytic wild rice species. The implications of these findings, which suggest a role of the inositol pathway in osmoregulation, are discussed.

Summary This paper attempts to capture the non-linearity of income responses of fairly disaggregated item groups with the help of a quadratic system of demand equations, introduced herein. Empirical performances of the quadratic system and some other models have been examined using Indian consumer expenditure data.

Abstract Respiratory sounds having a pulmonary origin from both normal subjects and tuberculosis patients were recorded and a preliminary analysis was made with a number of bandpass filters. These investigations indicate a distinct difference in wave shapes between sound signals recorded from normal and diseased subjects.
