Published 1993Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The reactive ion etching characteristics of gallium nitride (GaN) in silicon tetrachloride plasmas (SiCl4, 1:1/SiCl4:Ar, and 1:1/SiCl4:SiF4) in the pressure range between 20 and 80 mTorr have been investigated. For the pressure range investigated, etch rates are found to be essentially identical for the different gas mixtures and also invariant with pressure. However for all gas mixtures, etch rates increased monotonically with increasing plasma self-bias voltage exceeding 50 nm/min at 400 V. This is one of the highest etch rate ever reported for GaN. Smooth and anisotropic etch profiles are demonstrated for structures of submicrometer dimensions. The slight overcut observed in the etch profiles is attributed to the significant role of physical ion bombardment in the etching mechanism. Auger electron spectroscopy show that a wet etch in dilute HF is needed to clear the Si (in the form of SiOx) embedded in the near surface of GaN during etching thereby restoring etched surfaces to their virgin state.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1992Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Hydrogen desorption from (2×1) and (3×1) H-terminated Si(100) surfaces due to irradiation by electron beams with 2–5 keV beam energies has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) has been employed to monitor Si, O, and C signals periodically with continuous irradiation of an electron beam on H-terminated Si(100) surfaces. An incubation phenomenon is observed in the time evolution profiles of the Si, O, and C AES signals for all H-terminated Si(100) surfaces. The incubation period is believed to be associated with the time required for desorption of hydrogen from the H-terminated Si surface as a result of electron beam irradiation. Among (2×1) and (3×1) H-terminated Si(100) surfaces, the (3×1) surface is found to have greater hydrogen coverage than (2×1) surface. The hydrogen desorption cross section is found to range from 4×10−19 to 8×10−18 cm2 and decrease with increasing beam energy in the 2–5 keV range.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A significant decrease in dark current with no change in the responsivity or the bandwidth was obtained by independently engineering the Schottky barrier heights at the anode and cathode. These photodiodes with an electrode width and spacing of 2 μm exhibited a dark current density of 20.0 fA/μm2 at an applied bias of 5 V. This dark current density is ∼6 times lower than the previously reported minimum. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

On activation to factor IXa, by factor XIa or tissue factor–factor VIIa complex, it forms tenase complex with factor VIIIa, in the presence of Ca2+. This tenase complex enzymatically converts factor X to factor Xa, thereby bringing about the coagulation cascade. Mutations in factor IX gene have been shown to cause haemophilia B, which is inherited as an X-linked recessive disorder. Herein we report a novel missense mutation at the nucleotide position 30829-T 〉 A in the exon 8 of factor IX gene. This transversion leads to the substitution of histidine 236 to glutamine. This resulting abnormal protein has been named factor IXDelhi. Molecular modelling was performed to predict the molecular pathology of this mutation. We predict that this change in the catalytic domain may affect the surface loop that accommodates Ca2+, thereby leading to severe bleeding disorder.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The earthquake was felt up to 250–350 km away from Poh and Keylong in the north to Delhi in the south and beyond Chandigarh in the west. Seismologists of the Seismotectonic Group of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology studied fissures, surface breaks, and the foreshock and aftershock activity caused by this event. Land fissures show normal dislocations of 0.06–1 m, run E-W and NE-SW in the epicentral region and could be followed for 30–40 km.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The very remoteness of these islands from the mainland has preserved their pristine environment and spectacular natural beauty. The Andman and Nicobar Administration is going for major developmental projects to cope with the increasing needs of the people, which ultimately results in significant changes in environmental quality. This paper describes the existing environmental quality around Port Blair city, which will give baseline scenario to assess the environmental impacts due to developments in the future. In order to monitor the air quality of the region, sampling stations were selected based on the locations of various industries and domestic activities. Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM), Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) were monitored for a period of one month during winter season. In addition, micrometeorological data, viz. wind speed and direction were also recorded and analysed to obtain the representative meteorological scenario of the air basin. The monitored values of ambient air quality was found to be within the NAAQ standards of India. Similarly, noise levels were also measured at various locations viz., residential areas, commercial centres, villages, stone quarry sites and construction sites. Noise levels were found to exceed the standards at stone quarry, construction sites and other locations. Water quality studies were carried out with respect to surface and ground water. The various physico- chemical and bacteriological parameters were analysed. It was observed that the physico-chemical parameters of surface and ground water lie within the standards stipulated for Indian subcontinent except for heavy metals which exceed the limits in ground water samples. Bacteriological analysis of sea water and ground water indicate that they are contaminated with faecal matters. Further, the ground water can be used for drinking purposes only after adequate treatment.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
