Published 1997Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We numerically investigate the critical behavior of layered S=1/2 Ising ferromagnetic thin films with an enhanced surface coupling constant by using the spreading of damage technique through the Metropolis dynamics. We obtain that near the bulk critical spreading temperature, the Hamming distance profile changes its shape from a positive curvature profile for Js/J〈1.4 to a negative curvature profile for Js/J〉1.4, which is a signature of the reminiscent special surface-bulk transition which occurs in the semi-infinite system. Furthermore, we show that the temporal evolution of the damage front exhibits a typical exponential growth above critically while in the critical region the behavior is diffusive. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1988Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: A dc strain-gauge bridge amplifier configuration with automatic compensation of thermal drift using common operational amplifiers is presented. The amplifier operation is divided into two steps: one of auto-zeroing and other of amplification of the input signal. The zeroing of the input signal is achieved by switching the bridge excitation to zero periodically at a frequency of about 100 Hz, thus limiting the maximum frequency of the input signal to about 8 Hz. With a gain of 5000, the output voltage drift of the amplifier is measured to be about 1 mV for a temperature change of 40 °C.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1999Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We report on x-ray diffraction and micro-Raman scattering studies on zinc blende InN epitaxial films. The samples were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs(001) substrates using a InAs layer as a buffer. The transverse-optical (TO) and longitudinal-optical phonon frequencies at Γ of c-InN are determined and compared to the corresponding values for c-GaN. Ab initio self-consistent calculations are carried out for the c-InN and c-GaN lattice parameters and TO phonon frequencies. A good agreement between theory and experiment is found. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2000Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The thermal dynamics of thin vanadium dioxide films at the martensitic metal–insulator phase transition has been evaluated experimentally by thermal excitation spectroscopy. Over the transition region, the device becomes highly nonlinear, and its bolometric performance is affected. At low thermal cycling rates for a temperature around the percolation threshold, the device stochastically switches into an unusual pattern. The originally smooth and monotonic shape of the R(T) curve for minor loops suddenly becomes unstable and unpredictable. By direct observation of at least two strange attractors, the phenomenon clearly has been identified as chaotic. Bolometric performance of VO2 based devices in the transition region may suffer strong degradation for low thermal cycling rates. In this region, sensor responsivity for periodic thermal excitation is significantly reduced. Resistance noise is 1/f-type and self-generated oscillations were observed at frequency 〈10−2 Hz. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1999Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Transverse-optical (TO) and longitudinal-optical (LO) phonons of zinc blende InxGa1−xN (0≤x≤0.31) layers are observed through first-order micro-Raman scattering experiments. The samples are grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on GaAs (001) substrates, and x-ray diffraction measurements are performed to determine the epilayer alloy composition. Both the TO and LO phonons exhibit a one-mode-type behavior, and their frequencies display a linear dependence on the composition. The Raman data reported here are used to predict the A1 (TO) and E1 (TO) phonon frequencies of the hexagonal InxGa1−xN alloy. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 2000Staff ViewISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The effects of electrothermal feedback on the performance of a micromachined superconducting high Tc transition edge bolometer, over a temperature range 85–95 K, have been investigated. The system behaves nonlinearly, due to the variation of the resistance-temperature coefficient β with temperature. Optimum operating points of constant current mode (CCM) and constant voltage mode (CVM) modes vary with temperature and biasing conditions. In CCM, effective response time τeff varies little with temperature. The optimum output signal of CVM occurs at approximately 3–5 K lower temperature within the tail region, where β is maximum. The biasing voltage also displays a maximum, above which the bolometric performance degrades. The CCM exhibits a comparatively limited linear dynamic range. Negative thermal feedback causes a decrease of τeff of up to 2 orders of magnitude in CVM. CCM requires precise thermal stabilization at midtransition. Noise in both modes is limited by the 1/f contribution. Maximum D* values are slightly higher for CVM at higher frequencies. Bolometer operation in the CVM mode requires cooling the heatsink below 77 K, but does not need accurate temperature control. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1439-0264Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: A complete left cranial vena cava (LCVC) was found in a normal horse. The LCVC was well developed, but there was a complete absence of the right cranial vena cava. The azygous vein was normally distributed on the right side of the thoracic vertebral bodies but passed ventral to the aortic arch to empty into the cranial vena cava on the left close to the origin of the aortic arch. The LCVC passed over the dorsal aspect of the left atrium to reach the coronary sulcus on the caudal aspect of the heart. The LCVC opened into the right atrium via a 5 cm diameter orifice (orifice of coronary sinus). The vena cordis magna joined the LCVC 6 cm from the orifice of the coronary sinus. Complete dissection of the horse revealed no other developmental abnormalities. This case is compared with similar cases in the literature.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2621Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Process Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: The hygroscopic behaviour of freeze dried bananas at several temperatures is presented. The adsorption isotherms were of sigmoid shape and the particle size of the freeze dried materials did not affect the general isothermal behaviour. The limits for caking were found at a water activity (aw) of about 0.33 at 38°C. The results fit the Henderson equation quite well at the four temperatures under test.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
