Development efforts are directed at advanced reflectometry systems for next generation tokamaks such as ITER. Laboratory tests have been successfully completed for a pulsed radar reflectometer (τ(approximately-equal-to)200 ps) to be tested on DIII-D. In addition, there exists a need for sources and components beyond those commercially available. Monolithic quasi-optical spatial power combined arrays of solid state devices will provide continuous, watt level swept source coverage up to 200 GHz as well as electronically controlled beam steering, focusing, and modulation. Studies are also underway to address the feasibility of instantaneous profile coverage using monolithic impulse generators (τ(approximately-equal-to)1–3 ps) comprised of spatially combined nonlinear transmission lines, employing novel quantum barrier varactors.

Abstract Hollow-fibre carbon membranes with different pore sizes were tested as catalyst supports in the hydrogenation of CO. The factors which contributed to the uniformity of the porous structure and to an increase in the specific surface area of the membranes also resulted in enhanced performances of the catalysts.

Abstract The structure of synthesized cobalt hydroxoaluminate (CHA) and course of thermolysis and reduction were investigated by XPA (including high-temperature x-ray diffraction), thermal chromatography, DTA, DTG, IR, and UV spectroscopy. It was shown that the activity the products of reduction activation of CHA in synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2 is a function of the temperature of reduction and synthesis. It was concluded that hydrocarbons are synthesized on Co/CoAl2O4. The production of CHA are active in the same reduction temperature range as the previously studied cobalt cement catalysts.

Abstract A study has been made of the effect of Pd on the activity and selectivity of Co catalysts prepared by impregnating various supports (SiO2, SiO2-Al2O3, Al2O3) with cobalt carbonyl or nitrate in the synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2. It is shown that the addition of Pd leads to an increase in the yield of liquid hydrocarbons and to a change in their composition. It has been established by IR spectroscopy that the introduction of Pd into the composition of carbonyl catalysts affects the formation of their surface.

Abstract The effect of the nature of the silicate support on the activity and selectivity of 10%. Co/M silicate catalysts (where M=Cu, Zn, Ce, Ti, Hf, La, Al, Zr, Co, Mg) in the synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2 has been established. Co and Zr catalysts have been shown to provide the highest catalytic efficiency. The yield of liquid hydrocarbons in their presence exceeds 120 g m−3.

Abstract The activity and selectivity of 10 % Co/support and 10 % Ni/support catalysts (where the support is A12O3, SiO2, C) in the synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO2 and H2 were studied. The extent of conversion of the starting mixture and the yield of methane were shown to depend on the composition of the catalytic system. Cobalt catalysts with various types of carbons as supports are the most active. They permit the synthesis of methane in yields up to 70 % of the theoretical value.

Abstract It has been demonstrated that together with C1-C6 aliphatic hydrocarbons up to 20% C6-C9 aromatic hydrocarbons are formed from a mixture of CO∶H2 (1∶1) in the presence of 8.2% Fe-4.5% K/Al2O3. A new method for determining the parameter a in the Schultz-Flory equation has been proposed which is applicable to the synthesis of low molecular mass C1-C6 hydrocarbons. It has been shown that the mass fractions of aromatic hydrocarbons are higher than the values expected on the basis of a step-wise mechanism for growth of the hydrocarbon chain.

Abstract The use of an Ni-Pd/Al2O3 catalyst in the synthesis of C1-C4 hydrocarbons from CO and H2 permits us to increase the selectivity and total yield of these products by a factor of 1.5–2.0 relative to the corresponding nickel and palladium catalysts. The optimal temperatures and CO/H2 ratios for obtaining hydrocarbons were determined. A structure was proposed for the active sites of the bimetallic catalyst.

Abstract A study was carried out on the high-pressure carbonylation of nitrobenzene and 3-chloronitrobenzene by CO in cyclohexanol in the presence of PdCl2-FeCl3-pyridine with the formation of cyclohexyl-N-phenylcarbamate and cyclohexyl-N-3-chlorophenylcarbamate in 90–95% yield and nitro compound conversion of 95–99%. The feasibility of the repeated use of this catalyst was demonstrated.

Abstract The surface composition of Ni-Pd/Al2O3 catalysts has been studied using XPES and adsorption methods. The bimetallic catalysts differ from the single-metal Ni and Pd catalysts in the dispersivity of the metal phase which depends on the method of preparation and the presence of K+ promoter. A catalyst produced by the immersion method is strongly enriched in Pd compared with impregnated catalysts.

Abstract The 32% Co-3% MgO-ZSM (SiO2/Al2O3=38) system has been studied by means of temperature-programmed reduction, temperature-programmed desorption, and IR spectroscopy. The data from temperature-programmed reduction show that cobalt exists on the surface of the catalyst in the form of Co2+, CoO, Co3O4, and CoO·MgO solid solutions. Reduction of the sample results in the formation of a very inhomogeneous surface with four groups of sites.

Abstract The influence of additions of 0.1–0.5% Pd or Ru in a 10% Co/Al2O3 catalyst on its activity and selectivity in the synthesis of liquid hydrocarbons from CO and H2 has been studied. It has been shown that the bimetallic systems make it possible to carry out the synthesis of hydrocarbons with a higher extent of conversion of CO and a higher yield of C 5 + carbons in comparison with the original Co catalyst. Co-Ru catalysts exhibit exceptionally high selectivity (up to 80%) with respect to the formation of liquid products. It has been demonstrated by temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) that the introduction of Pd an dRu promotes the reduction of Co at lower temperatures and the formation of cobalt aluminates.
