A nitrogen source was needed for the flowering of Lemna gibba L., a long-day plant, and L. perpusilla Torr., a shortday plant. The level of endogenous amino acids analyzed by an Amino Acid Analyzer, rose during the first few inductive cycles, but was reduced during later stages of the flowering process. Serine and threonine levels increased during the light period and decreased during the dark period in L. perpusilla. Exogenous serine and threonine added to the culture medium at 10−6M increased the rate of flowering by more than 35% over the controls. Cysteine inhibited flowering, while other amino acids had little or no promotive effect on flowering. Serine and threonine increased flowering rate in L. perpusilla only when added during a dark period of the inductive cycle. The addition of amino acids during a light period not followed by a dark period had no effect on flowering.

The dark reaction of the short day plant Lemna perpusilla was investigated. It was found that 3-phosphoglycerate and pyruvate (10−6M) increased the flowering rate in the presence of nitrates. Pyruvate-2-14C was added to the culture solution during two hours of the dark reaction and 14C was incorporated into serine, aspartate and glutamate. It was postulated that pyruvate reacted with a nitrogen source forming an intermediate, possibly aspartate, which was further converted into serine. L. perpusilla failed to flower when the dark period was interrupted with red light and as a result endogenous serine accumulated in a high concentration. The dark reaction of L. perpusilla, in which serine was involved, required (1) oxygen, (2) ATP, (3) moderate temperature, and (4) an enzyme system.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the longitudinal effect of gradual coronary occlusion on regional myocardial metabolism of 15-p-123I-iodophenyl pentadecanoic acid ([123I]IPPA). Adult dogs were imaged using [123I]IPPA and planar gamma imaging. A thoracotomy was performed and an ameroid constrictor of appropriate size permanently positioned on the left anterior descending coronary artery. The dogs were imaged after injection of 3–5 mCi [123I]IPPA at various times over a 2-week period. With imaging on days 7 and 14, the dogs were paced at a rate of 185. Time-activity curves were generated and t1/2 values calculated using monoexponential curve fitting. Results indicate a significant increase in t1/2 between control and 14 days after surgery in the apical wall (29±7 to 53±18 min;P〈0.05). Although there was also an increased t1/2 in the lateral wall, this was not significant (27±8 to 78±99 min;P 〉 0.05). There was no significant change in t/12 in the septal wall (27±9 to 33±8 min;P〉0.05). We conclude that [123I]IPPA is a useful indicator of

Abstract The E-W-trending Kohistan terrane in the NW Himalaya is a sandwich of a magmatic arc between the collided Karakoram (Asian) and Indian plates. The southern part of the Kohistan arc is principally made up of amphibolites derived from volcanic and plutonic rocks of Early Cretaceous age. Gabbroic relics in the amphibolites display calc-alkaline character, and their mineralogy is similar to low-P plutonic rocks reported from modern and ancient island arcs. The largest of these relics, occurring along the southern margin of the amphibolite belt near Khwaza Khela, is subcircular in outline and is about 1 km across. It consists of cumulate gabbros and related rocks displaying a record of cooling and crustal thickening. Primary olivine and anorthite reacted to produce coronas consisting of two pyroxenes +Mg-Fe2+-Al spinel ± tschermakitic hornblende at about 800° C, 5.5–7.5 kbar. This thermotectonic event is of regional extent and may be related to the overthrusting of the Karakoram plate onto the Kohistan arc some 85 Ma ago, or even earlier. Later the gabbros were locally traversed by veins containing high-P assemblages: garnet, kyanite, zoisite, paragonite, oligoclase, calcite, scapolite and quartz ° Chlorite ° Corundum ± diopside. Formed in the range 510–600° C, and 10–12 kbar, these suggest further thickening and cooling of the crust before its uplift during the Tertiary. This paper presents microprobe data on the minerals, and discusses the tectonic implications of the coronitic and vein assemblages in the gabbros.
