Published 1999Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: The enhanced coercivity of ball milled nanoparticles of SmCo5 has been attributed to the reduced particle size, but the milling process introduces additional strain which can also affect the coercivity. Here the effects of size and strain are decoupled from each other using a combination of x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and coercivity measurements. Ball milled SmCo5 nanoparticles were annealed under different temperature, time, and atmospheric conditions to minimize the strain without chemically altering the sample, and with minimal grain growth and sintering. X-ray diffraction was used to determine if phase changes had occurred, and to monitor the average grain size and strain. From scanning electron microscopy the log-normal size distributions were found and no evidence of sintering was revealed. The sample coercivities were measured by superconducting quantum interference device following annealing. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

These changes arise from charge transfer initiated by optical absorption near 2 eV. An insulator-to-metal transition at 170 K is an upper limit for significant ΔHc. The larger ΔHc for smaller (17 nm) particles was correlated with a distortion about the Co2+ ions at B sites, which increases the absorption probability. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1997Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: We report on the low temperature thermal demagnetization behavior observed in samples of the Vitrovac 7600TM commercial amorphous alloy which were submitted to different crystallization treatments, all of them resulting in the induction of nanostructures. Our experimental data were analyzed in terms of the predictions of different models of ferromagnetism allowing us to conclude that our samples behaved as weak ferromagnets with nanostructure dependent spin wave spectra and a significant contribution to the demagnetization processes from single particle excitations. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
