ISSN: 1089-7658Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: MathematicsPhysicsNotes: There is a theorem of Wigner that states that phase-plane distribution functions involving the state bilinearly and having correct marginals must take negative values for certain states. The purpose of this paper is to support the statement that these phase-plane distribution functions are for hardly any state everywhere non-negative. In particular, it is shown that for certain generalized Wigner distribution functions there are no smooth states (except the Gaussians for the Wigner distribution function itself) whose distribution function is everywhere non-negative. This class of Wigner-type distribution functions contains the Margenau–Hill distribution. Furthermore, the argument used in the proof of Wigner's theorem is augmented to show that under mild conditions one can find for any two states f, g with non-negative distribution functions a linear combination h of f and g whose distribution function takes negative values, unless f and g are proportional.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Five weeks after cessation of this treatment regimen H. pylori was eradicated in 23 patients. In 8 of the remaining 10 patients, H. pylori had become resistant to metronidazole. In this study resistance was significantly associated with smoking habits, but not with age, bacterial load, gastritis score or alcohol consumption.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1572-879XSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Chemistry and PharmacologyNotes: Abstract Tetracarbonyldichlororhodium(I) [Rh(CO)2(μ -Cl)]2 entrapped in faujasite type zeolites reacted with phosphines PMe3- xPhx at 393-463 K to a different extent. Although according to computational studies phosphines with x〈2 should be small enough to enter the micropore system, the reaction was in no case complete and led to a mixture of products as observed by IR spectroscopy. Furthermore surface-bonded rhodium carbonyl complexes were synthesized in mesoporous aluminium-containing MCM-41 material by reacting acetylacetonatodicarbonylrhodium(I) [Rh(acac)(CO)2] with Brønsted-acidic centers under formation of a chemically bonded [Rh(CO)2]- species and acetylacetone according to IR spectroscopy. The corresponding surface-bonded phosphine complex [(Os)x-Rh(chiraphos)] was synthesized and identified with IR and 31P MAS NMR spectroscopy.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Previous investigations have indicated changes in this balance during the colorectal oncogenic process that merit further investigation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the human colorectal cancer sequence is accompanied by changes in the protein and activity levels of the antioxidant enzymes manganese- and copper/zinc-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD and Cu/Zn-SOD). Patients and methods : SOD levels were assessed in colorectal adenomas, carcinomas, and liver metastases and were compared with those in the corresponding normal tissues (n=35 in each group). Mn- and Cu/Zn-SOD expression was first evaluated semiquantitatively by electrophoretic activity analysis, immunoblotting, and immunohistochemistry and was subsequently quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) and spectrophotometric activity assays. Results : The semiquantitative analyses showed enhanced Mn-SOD levels, primarily localized in (neoplastic) epithelial cells, in carcinomas, and in liver metastases as compared with adenomas and normal mucosa, whereas no consistent pattern was observed for Cu/Zn-SOD. Normal liver tissue expressed the highest levels of both SODs. The quantitative SOD analyses confirmed these observations and revealed that carcinomas and liver metastases expressed 2–4 times more Mn-SOD protein and enzymatic activity (0.0005 〈 P ≤ 0.01) than did the normal mucosa. Adenomas expressed intermediate Mn-SOD levels, which increased significantly with the diameter and tended to increase with the grade of dysplasia and presence of a villous component. In contrast, adenomas, carcinomas, and the corresponding normal mucosa were found to have a similar Cu/Zn-SOD content, whereas liver metastases contained significantly (P 〈 0.02) more Cu/Zn-SOD as compared with these tissues. In addition, the Cu/Zn-SOD content was not related to any histopathological characteristic of the carcinomas or adenomas. Conclusions : Our study indicates that the development of neoplasia in the human colorectum is accompanied by major changes in the level and activity of Mn-SOD. This observation illustrates that Mn-SOD might have a functional role in human colorectal carcinogenesis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-1351Keywords: Key words Locomotion ; Sense of equilibrium ; Lumbosacral ; Spinal cord ; BirdSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: Abstract In birds there are anatomical specializations in the lumbosacral vertebrae and spinal cord. These include segmentally organized bony canals which are related to accessory lobes of the spinal cord. Both structures are connected by cerebrospinal fluid. To test whether these specializations function as a sense organ of equilibrium the effect of opening the fluid space was studied in pigeons. Locomotory behaviors on the ground (landing on a perch, keeping balance on a rotating perch, walking) but not flight were significantly impaired after lesion. These results support the assumption that the lumbosacral specializations are involved in the control of locomotion on the ground.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In the lymphocytes there was a remarkable tendency to exchange parts of the chromosomes Nos. 7 and 14, the translocations almost exclusively taking place in bands 7p13, 7q32 and 14q11. Seven different types of rearrangements between Nos. 7 and 14, and some other chromosomal aberrations were found. No abnormalities could be detected in the bone marrow. The patient somewhat resembles those affected with ataxia-telangiectasia or with Bloom's syndrome, but on clinical and cytogenetic grounds these disorders could be excluded. 7/14 Translocations similar to those found in our patient's lymphocytes have been reported to occur very rarely in the lymphocyte cultures of individuals with apparently normal chromosome constitution. A relationship between these phenomena may exist.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
