Published 1991Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Hysteresis in the microwave-power absorption of HTSC powders was studied as a function of temperature (T), field-sweep amplitude (Hmax), and orientation between the dc field (Hdc) and the wave vector of the microwaves (k). It was found that (i) the sizable low-temperature hysteresis effects occur only if Hdc(parallel)k, (ii) the temperature and frequency dependence of the hysteresis is strongly affected by Hmax, (iii) the high- and low-temperature virgin curves are quite different, and (iv) the minimum of the absorption signal increases with Hmax and T. The low-temperature hysteresis loops were found to be similar to loops obtained from nonlinear equations describing cusp catastrophes.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1468-2397Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: SociologyNotes: Bengt Westerberg missed the point in his critique of “Pollution rituals in Sweden: pursuit of a drug-free society”. The effectiveness of Sweden's restrictive line was not the issue. Moreover, Westerberg's defence of Swedish policy was highly selective in its use of statistics. Other statistics cast some doubt on his case. His reply also failed to mention that the opposition to some aspects of the restrictive line had included his own party and other political parties. The main point of my original article was ignored – the argument that it is unjust and illiberal to sentence an individual to prison for self-harm. It is also illiberal to argue that the end of a drug-free society is justified by means that encroach on basic human rights.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1468-2397Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: SociologyNotes: The logic of Sweden's restrictive drug policy has led its advocates to promote increasingly extreme measures. Making the consumption of drugs not only a criminal offence but an imprisonable one has enabled the authorities to subject suspected drug users to urine and blood tests. This extreme policy can be understood as a response by a society so obsessed by health, cleanliness and order that drug use has taken on symbolic significance. In its determination to rid the social body of drugs, the Swedish authorities have shown that they will seek our pollution by whatever measures available. In doing so they are in danger of becoming repressive and intolerant.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1990Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Measurements of the magnetic-field-induced microwave absorption, P(H), in micron-sized powders of the high-temperature superconductor Y1Ba2Cu3O7 at several microwave frequencies for 1.3 K≤T≤Tc are reported. The hysteresis loops [P(H) vs H] observed at low temperatures (T≤16 K) indicate the presence of spontaneous circulating currents within the sample. These hysteresis loops and dc magnetization data (taken for both field-cooled and zero-field-cooled states) combine to suggest that the magnetic moments of these loops are in a "spin-glass-like'' state.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1600-0714Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: The discriminative value of toluidine blue vital staining for detecting oral premalignant lesions and carcinomas was tested in the hamster DMBA buccal pouch model. The stain technique was further tested for specificity using the turpentine liquid petrolatum (TLP) hamster cheek pouch model for hyperplasia. Although carcinomas frequently exhibited toluidine blue staining, a 27.8% false negative result was noted. Premalignant lesions (dysplasia and carcinoma in situ) seldom retained toluidine blue stain and yielded a histologically confirmed (95.2%) false negative result. DMBA induced papillomas yielded a 5% false positive result. The TLP model failed to produce either clinically or histologically evident hyperplastic/hyperkeratotic lesions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1983Staff ViewISSN: 1600-0714Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Tyrosine-rich crystalloids are described in an example of an adenoid cystic carcinoma arising in an oral minor salivary gland of the hard palate. This represents the first reported case of an adenoid cystic carcinoma of oral minor salivary gland in which tyrosine-rich deposits have been identified. The tyrosine deposits appear refractile but not birefringent at the light microscopic level; and histochemical findings indicate a relatively simple, homogeneous chemical composition rich in tyrosine. Their ultrastructural nature is that of a finely granular, but otherwise patternless, highly electron-dense material. The electron microscopic features of the neoplasm are similar to previous reports. Based upon the findings of this and previous investigations, it is not as yet possible to state whether the tyrosine-rich deposits truly represent a crystalline or amorphous solid.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
