Abstract The laser ablation of solid targets made of mixtures of simple components yields cluster ions of various composition. In this paper, positive cluster ions formed by laser ablation of metal oxide and graphite systems are reported. The formation of Me m C n + cluster ions indicate a chemical reaction in the surrounding area hit by the laser beam.

In this study the analysis of ionic and neutral species produced by the interaction between laser radiation and SnSe and SnTe targets is reported. Time of flight mass spectrometry and emission spectroscopy are used for the characterization of the ablated material. Relations between target and plume composition are discussed in order to improve the understanding of the laser deposition process.

Background: In health-related quality of life (HRQL) studies on allergic rhinitis, both disease-specific and generic questionnaires have been extensively used. Seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) has been studied mainly by focusing on symptomatology. The present study aimed to evaluate the SAR-HRQL by means of two questionnaires, the Medical Outcome Study Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and a new instrument examining satisfaction in 32 aspects of daily life: the Satisfaction Profile (SAT-P). Methods: Thirty-three patients with SAR (aged 33.5±8.5 years; 12 men, 21 women) were evaluated during and 2 months after the pollen season. Data were compared with reference samples by t-test, and baseline and follow-up HRQL scores were compared by a matched-pair test. Results: Patients' HRQL scores collected during the pollen season were significantly lower than reference sample data in many SF-36 scores and in one SAT-P item. No differences emerged between SF-36 and SAT-P scores collected outside the pollen season and reference sample scores. Compared to baseline, outside the pollen season, patients reported significantly higher scores in the following SF-36 scales: physical functioning (P=0.002), physical role (P=0.00001), bodily pain (P=0.01), and vitality (P=0.008); and significantly higher scores in only two SAT-P items (physical well-being [P=0.009] and resistance to stress [P=0.01]). Conclusions: Our data confirm the utility of using symptomatologic and health-status questionnaires in evaluating the HRQL of SAR patients. More general quality of life questionnaires may prevent the symptomatologic and functional problems from being adequately recognized and managed. SAT-P can be a fruitful additional tool in HRQL evaluation.

Introduction: To date we have available specific instruments assessing health-related quality of life (HRQL) in rhinoconjunctivitis or in asthma, but not instruments evaluating rhinitis and asthma together, although they often coexist. The aim of our study was to develop and validate a specific quality of life (QoL) questionnaire for adult patients with rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma or both.Materials and methods: A pool of 42 items covering the main symptoms and problems related to respiratory allergy, was generated based on literature review and clinical experience. The items were randomly listed and presented to 148 consecutive outpatients 46 suffering from asthma (age 32.9 ± 14.3 years), 53 suffering from rhinoconjunctivitis (age 32.6 ± 11.5 years) and 49 from asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis (age 35.6 ± 12.2 years). The patients were asked to indicate which item they had directly experienced and for each of them, its importance on a four-point scale (1 = not important; 4 = very important). Twelve items were cancelled from the list, because of low importance or redundance. In the instrument validation phase, 104 patients (42 with rhinoconjunctivitis alone and 62 with asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis) were evaluated with the generic instrument SF-36 and the new questionnaire (RHINASTHMA).Results: RHINASTHMA was able to differentiate patients with rhinitis from those with both rhinitis and asthma. In stable condition, RHINASTHMA showed good reliability. The factor analysis extracted three factors with a good reliability (0.93, 0.87, 0.76).Discussion: RHINASTHMA is the first tool aimed at evaluating HRQL impairment in patients with rhinitis and/or asthma. It provides a short and simple assessment, and has overall psychometric properties. This is of relevance because of the frequent asthma–rhinitis comorbidity.

Background:  Few articles are available about chronic urticaria (CU) impact on patients’ quality of life (QoL). The aim of our study was to evaluate QoL in CU patients both focusing on health status and subjective satisfaction. We adopted two generic tools: SF-36 (an health status questionnaire) and SAT-P (a satisfaction profile). Methods:  Twenty-one untreated patients (five males, 16 females; aged 46.3 ± 12.4) affected by CU, were enrolled. SF-36 and SAT-P scores of CU patients were compared with scores of a group of 27 patients with respiratory allergy. Published reference values of 608 and 241 Italian healthy subjects were used as controls, respectively, for SF-36 and SAT-P.Results:  Patients with CU compared with allergic patients referred significantly lower scores in physical functioning (P = 0.046), role physical (P = 0.01), bodily pain (P = 0.0001), general health (P = 0.0043) and role emotional (P = 0.04), and compared with reference sample reported lower scores in all SF-36 domains (P 〈 0.0001).SAT-P scores of CU patients compared with patients with respiratory allergy and with reference sample were significantly lower in many aspects of daily life. Conclusions:  These results show a significant impact on health status and on subjective satisfaction in patients with CU: the symptoms affect everyday life, limiting and impairing physical and emotional functioning, and acts as an indirect burden on life satisfaction.

Abstract. Pulsed laser ablation is a very interesting method of depositing thin films of several materials and compounds, such as oxides, nitrides, insulators, semiconductors, and superconductors. Indium and tin oxide polycrystalline thin films have been grown on silicon (100) substrates by reactive PLD from two metallic targets of indium and tin by multilayered deposition, in the presence of oxygen, using a frequency-doubled Nd-YAG laser (λ=532 nm). The films produced have been studied to evaluate their use as NO gas sensors, and the best performance has been found by varying some important parameters, such as the substrate temperature and the pressure of oxygen in the deposition chamber. X-ray diffraction analysis of the deposited films shows that they are polycrystalline with a preferential (400) orientation. Electrical resistivity measurements, performed by using a four-point probe technique, show a sharp increase in resistivity when the films are exposed to NO. The electrical responses of tin oxide-indium oxide multilayered thin films are reported.

    Description / Table of Contents:
Summary In order to give a right interpretation to supposed isolated lesions of the conjunctiva and of the ocular globe caused by dermatophytes and to those that more frequently appear in the course of deep dermatophytosis (kerion), the AA. executed a series of researches on normal rabbit and on rabbit infected with experimental dermatomycose at the sixth and twentyfifth day after infection, that is in different moments of allergic state, the development of which, in the rabbit, as been exactly observed and established by them with preliminary experiences. They examined in this manner the reaction of conjunctiva, cornea, anterior chamber and vitreous after inoculations, with various technic modalities, of suspensions of Trichophyton gypseum asteroides and Microsporon lanosum. The AA. have not recognized a true pathogenic power of these dermatophytes against the conjunctiva and other parts of ocular globe (excluded crystalline) and they doubt that the described isolated manifestations are caused by a direct establishing of fungi. Corroborated by results obtained with inoculation of fungous material into the conjunctiva of rabbits which had a developed sensitivity, the AA. interpret every conjunctivitis that sometimes appears in the course of deep dermatophytosis like a reaction of this tissue that is in allergic state for the preexistent cutaneous localisation of fungus, reaction caused by arrival of hyphomices or their toxins, or through the way of blood circulation or sometimes, as in particular case of conjunctiva, through externe way. An oftalmic reaction in the animal and in the man that have a developed sensitivity, has not been observed by AA. by means of instillation of concentrated trichophytin; it instead appears clearly and constantly in both of them when introduction is made through subconjunctival way.
    Notes:

Abstract Based on modal and chemical composition, the rocks of the Prairie Creek diatreme situated 4 km SSE of Murfreesboro, Pike County, Arkansas, are classified as micaceous kimberlite. The K-Ar isotopic analysis of phlogopite from this diatreme yielded an age of 106 ± 3 m.y. (Albian) which is in agreement with stratigraphic relations. Electron beam probe data on minerals from kimberlite breccia, one of the three textural types, are presented. The breccia is considered as the potential source of the diamonds that have been mined at the diatreme. It contains phenocrysts of olivine (Fo90–92) and serpentine pseudomorphs after olivine embedded in a groundmass of serpentine, minor calcite, chrome-diopside, phlogopite (Mg/Mg+Fe = 84.15%), perovskite, spinels, and pentlandite. Xenoliths of shales, sandstones, and mantle-derived ultramafic material are also present. Spinels are rich in Cr, Ti, and Fe and generally low in Al. Zoned spinels show enrichments in Ti and Fe towards their rims. A positive correlation between 100(Fe3++Ti)/(Cr+Al+Fe3++Ti) and 100 Mg/(Mg+Fe2+) ratios exists in these spinels and probably reflects an oxygen fugacity increase during magma crystallization. Occluded gases in diamonds and kimberlites corroborate the hypothesis that the parent magma of the Prairie Creek kimberlite was derived by partial melting of upper-mantle garnet lherzolite under volatile-rich conditions, primarily enriched in H2O and CO2.
