The microwave spectrum of CH3HgCN has been measured for the ground vibrational state and the lowest bending mode ν10. The rotational constants of 25 isotopic species have been measured and used to calculate the following substitution structure: Hg–C (methyl)=2.0563(1), Hg–C(cyanide)=2.0369(2), C–N=1.1570(2), C–H=1.098(10) A(ring), and HCH angle=109.1(3)°. The average zero-point structure has also been estimated. The nuclear quadrupole coupling constant of 201Hg (I=3/2) has been determined as eQq=−1313.8(13) MHz, along the axis of the symmetric top for the vibrational ground state. The dipole moment has been determined from Stark effect measurements on the l-type doublets of V10=1 as 4.69(4) D. The l-type doublet constant was measured as q10=2.794(11) MHz.

SSRL has recently returned to extended running following the successful commissioning of a dedicated injector, and operation of the SPEAR storage ring exclusively for synchrotron radiation research. During the hiatus, the entire beamline data acquisition systems at the laboratory have been upgraded and extended to provide a more consistent, capable, and flexible interface to synchrotron users. Currently, 20 beamline stations have been commissioned, and planning is in the advanced stage to convert the remaining three beamline stations to use the new software set. This article outlines the design goals, implementation strategies, and capabilities of the new systems.

A general survey of odour generation in the axillae is given, with particular reference to the role of topically applied antimicrobial agents in odour suppression.A new apparatus is described which will allow a rapid and reliable quantification of in vivo antimicrobial action and which may be usefully employed in optimization of individual systems to achieve effective deodorancy.Findings are presented on the antimicrobial efficacy of deodorant compositions and correlated with practical olfactory studies. An optimized current preamplifier, consisting of a shunt resistor followed by a high speed field-effect transistor input instrumentation amplifier, appears suitable for use in scanning tunneling microscopy. The preamplifier has a transimpedance of 100 MΩ, a measured 3 dB bandwidth of 200 kHz, low phase distortion, and excellent noise performance. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

We report on a high optical quality, long-life guest-host photorefractive polymer composite which exhibits a 60% device steady-state diffraction efficiency and 120 cm−1 two-beam coupling gain, well in excess of its absorption of 3.5 cm−1, at a wavelength of 676 nm. In contrast to alternative composite materials of comparable high dye content, this performance has been achieved without unacceptably compromising device lifetime or ease of fabrication and storage. This is an efficient, easily prepared and comparatively stable polymer composite with device lifetimes under storage conditions already exceeding eight months and no indication of sample degradation with repeated holographic read–write cycles. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Widespread damage attributed to frost lift was seen in winter barley crops in Devon and Cornwall during late spring 1978. A break in the crown root system of plants had occurred. An affected crop of cv. Astrix in Devon yielded 3.5 t/ha; this was 1.8 t/ha less than an adjacent unaffected crop of the same cultivar.

    Notes:
The enteric bacterium Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic human pathogen. The strain ATCC39006 makes the red pigment, prodigiosin (Pig), and the β-lactam antibiotic carbapenem (Car). Mutants were isolated that were concomitantly defective for Pig and Car production. These mutants were found to have a mutation in the rap gene (regulation of antibiotic and pigment). Sequence analysis of the rap gene revealed a predicted protein product showing strong homology to SlyA, originally thought to be a haemolytic virulence determinant in Salmonella typhimurium. Homologues of rap were detected in several bacterial genera, including Salmonella, Yersinia, Enterobacter, and species of the plant pathogen, Erwinia. The Erwinia horEr (homologue of rap) and the Yersinia horYe genes were also found to be very similar to rap and slyA. Marker exchange mutagenesis of horEr revealed that it encoded a regulatory protein controlling the production of antibiotic and exoenzyme virulence determinants in the phytopathogen, Erwinia carotovora subspecies carotovora. We have shown that these new homologues of SlyA form a highly conserved subgroup of a growing superfamily of bacterial regulatory proteins controlling diverse physiological processes in human, animal and plant pathogens.
