Phys. 80, 1517 (1984)] for calculating diffusive reaction rates using Brownian dynamics simulations is reexamined. A new method is described in which a time-consuming portion of the algorithm is replaced by an analytical solution. When applied to two illustrative model systems, the new method is found to reduce the computational work by a factor of 2 or more.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1993Staff ViewISSN: 1525-1438Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Cancer antigen 125 (CA 125) was measured in 17 patients with ovarian carcinoma before their primary operation and during the first week after surgery. The purpose was to correlate the change in the antigen level with the patient’s survival. Before surgery normal (16–30 U ml−1 CA 125 values were measured in four patients and 13 had increased (75–11.356 U ml−1) antigen concentrations. After surgery the marker increased to 104–931% of the preoperative level in five patients. In 12 patients the post-operative antigen level decreased to 20–96% of the preoperative level. In seven of these patients CA 125 increased without exceeding the preoperative level, after the initial postoperative fall. Thus, the CA 125 level during the first week after primary operation of ovarian cancer patients seems to be influenced by other variable factors besides a reduced amount of tumor tissue. Therefore, an investigation of the correlation between the change in the CA 125 concentration within the first week after surgery and the survival of the patient cannot be performed for the time being.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1995Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7690Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsChemistry and PharmacologyNotes: When simulating a periodic molecular system, lattice sum methods may be used to evaluate the electrostatic interactions without resorting to an unphysical truncation of the potential. In a previous publication, we compared the computational efficiency of the Ewald and Particle-Particle Particle-Mesh (PPPM) lattice-sum methods. Because the PPPM method discretizes the field equations and utilizes the highly efficient fast Fourier transform algorithm, it requires significantly less computational effort than the Ewald method and scales almost linearly with system size. In this paper, we take a more detailed look into the theory behind the lattice-sum methods to clarify the underlying similarities between the Ewald method and the PPPM method. We also investigate the errors introduced by different approximation used in the discretization of the field equations in the PPPM method. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1440-0960Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: We have shown that corticosteroids and non-steroid anti-inflammatory agents suppress the increase in skin thickness in response to irritants applied to guinea pig skin. The combination of salicylic acid with corticosteroids and acetyl salicylic acid with hydrocortisone results in an antagonistic reduction of their anti-inflammatory activities. Indomethacin, in contrast, acts synergistically with corticosteroids.Sodium salicylate also suppresses DNA synthesis of human skin in vitro and hydrocortisone sodium succinate is able to abolish this suppression. This result, together with the results of trials on human volunteers, suggests that our findings may be relevant to the use of preparations containing combinations of non-steroid and steroid anti-inflammatory drugs in the clinical situation. The antagonism between salicylates on the one hand and indomethacin and steroids on the other, has been demonstrated by our work on the skin of man and the guinea pigs. A similar effect had been previously described in adjuvant induced arthropathy in the rat. These findings should alert clinicians who use anti-inflammatory agents in various combinations, to the possible reduction of clinical effect due to antagonism between salicylates and other anti-inflammatory drugs.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
