ISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Intense terahertz (THz) stimulated emission from boron-doped SiGe/Si quantum well structures with internal strain has been observed recently. We present a theoretical calculation which shows the formation of resonant states, and explains the origin of the observed temperature dependence of the dc conductivity under low bias voltage. Thus, the mechanism of THz lasing is population inversion of the resonant state with respect to the localized impurity states. Half of plasma α1-m is covalently linked to fibronectin and α1-inhibitor-3, and more than 95% of bikunin is part of pre-α-inhibitor, inter-α-inhibitor and related large molecules. Both α1-m and bikunin have been shown to be involved in inflammation, but the regulation of their synthesis is not clear. The authors have measured the plasma and urinary concentrations of α1-m and bikunin as well as their hepatic mRNA levels in rats during the development of collagen-induced arthritis. Also, the plasma concentrations of acknowledged acute-phase proteins were measured. The results suggested a biphasic inflammatory reaction: an early response after 1 week, represented by an elevated fibronectin level; and a late response after 3 weeks, represented by elevated α1-acid glycoprotein and decreased albumin and α1-inhibitor-3 levels. The α1-m–bikunin mRNA content in liver was slightly reduced after 1 week and elevated after 3 weeks, but the total concentrations of free and bound α1-m and bikunin in plasma were unchanged. The free bikunin fraction as well as the fibronectin/α1-m complex in plasma, however, were elevated after 1 week. Urinary bikunin levels were also elevated after 1 week, whereas urinary α1-m levels remained unchanged. The results thus suggest that free bikunin in plasma is increased and excreted in the urine at an early stage during the development of collagen-induced arthritis. Later, when the synthesis rate of α1-m–bikunin is elevated, both proteins are most likely directed to other locations in the body.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Specifically, the growth rate and crack closure behavior of long (∼17–38 mm) cracks, through-thickness physically-short (50–400 μm) cracks, and naturally-occurring microstructurally-small (2–400 μm) surface cracks have been examined experimentally from threshold levels to instability (over the range 10–12–10–6m/cycle). Results are compared with those predicted numerically using an elastic-plastic finite element analysis of fatigue crack advance and closure under both plane stress and plane strain conditions. It is shown that both the short through-thickness and small surface cracks propagate below the long crack threshold at rates considerably in excess of long cracks, consistent with the reduced levels of closure developed in their limited wake. Numerical analysis, however, is found consistently to underpredict the magnitude of crack closure for both large and small cracks, particularly at near-threshold levels; an observation attributed to the fact that the numerical procedures can only model contributions from cyclic plasticity, whereas in reality significant additional closure arises from the wedging action of fracture surface asperities and corrosion debris. Although such shielding mechanisms are considered to provide a prominent mechanism for differences in the growth rate behavior of large and small cracks, other factors such as the nature of the stress and strain singularity and the extent of local plasticity are shown to play an important role.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A strip crack closure model was used to interpret experimental data, and to make predictions for the crack growth.The strip model is based on the Dugdale concept, but modified to keep plastically-stretched materials on the crack surface so that the crack opening load can be determined, and the fatigue crack growth can be analysed according to Elber's crack growth assumption. Differing from other models of the same kind, a variable constraint factor was introduced to account for the gradual transition of stress state at the crack tip resulting from the crack growth. It has been shown that the transition of stress state at the crack tip causes the unusual behaviour of the fatigue crack growth in sheets. Both experiments and predictions show that a crack may grow faster at a low load than at a higher one in a certain applied load range due to the crack tip stress state transition. The crack tip stress state also contributes to the thickness effect observed for the crack growth in sheets. In agreement with experimental results, it has been shown that a plane stress state will prevail at the crack tip in a thin sheet compared to that in a thick sheet. The plane stress state results in a higher crack opening level which leads to a longer fatigue life for thin sheets.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Der Zugversuch gibt nur dann zuverlässige Resultate, wenn die Deformationsgeschwindigkeit hinreichend klein ist und die Probekörper so dimensioniert sind, daß der einachsige Spannungszustand annähernd verwirklicht wird. Nur Meßresultate an Filmen fast gleicher Dicke lassen sich direkt vergleichen. Außer der Vorgeschichte der Filme ist der Reifungszustand der Lösungen wohl zu beachten. Der-Einfluß eines Weichhalters ist von seinem Gelatinierungsvermögen (Polarität) und der Raumerfüllung abhängig. Die Harze lassen sich durch Verträglichkeitskurven charakterisieren. In the present study, four structurally diverse polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were chosen from a set of 20 PCBs selected to represent the 154 tetra- through hepta-chlorinated biphenyls. The purpose was to determine estrogenic activities of the chosen PCBs and five of their hydroxylated derivatives (OH-PCBs). A human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) and primary cultures of rainbow trout (Oncorhyncus mykiss) hepatocytes were used to determine estrogenic effects. The PCBs 2,2′,4,6,6′-pentachlorobiphenyl (104) and 2,2′,3,4′, 5,6,6′-heptachlorobiphenyl (188), and the hydroxylated PCBs 2,2′,4′,6′-tetrachloro-4-biphenylol (4′-50), 2′,4′,6′-trichloro-4-biphenylol (4′-30), 2′,3,5,5′-tetrachloro-4-biphenylol (4′-72), 2′,3,3′,5′,6′-pentachloro-4-biphenylol (4′-112), and 2′,3,4′,5,6′-pentachloro-4-biphenylol (4′-121) significantly increased MCF-7 cell proliferation. The coaddition of hydroxytamoxifen, an estrogen antagonist, inhibited increased cell proliferation. The activity of the hydroxylated PCBs 4′-50 and 4′-30 was significantly higher at all nominal concentrations tested as compared to the corresponding PCB, viz., PCB 104. The hydroxylated PCBs 4′-50, 4′-30, 4′-72 and 4′-112 induced vitellogenin synthesis in rainbow trout hepatocytes. Significant differences were found in the MCF-7 system between the parent PCB and its hydroxylated derivative, viz., for 4′-50/4′-30 and 104, and in the rainbow trout hepatocyte assay between 4′-112 and 112, respectively. No activity was observed for PCB 58 in any of the two assays in the present study. Even though cells from two different species (human and fish) are used in the present study, the results obtained by the two methods agree fairly well. In both studies the hydroxylated PCBs were more active than the PCBs, and 4′-30 was the most active compound second only to 17β-estradiol.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

A human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) was used to develop an in vitro screening assay for the detection of xenoestrogenic environmental pollutants. MCF-7 cells were cultured in DMEM containing 5% fetal bovine serum (FBS). An estrogenic response was defined as an increase in the frequency of proliferating MCF-7 cells, and was measured using a thymidine analog, bromodeoxyuridine, and flow cytometry. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and 4-n-nonylphenol (4-n-NP) were used as model chemicals. The proliferation rate of S-phase cells after 24 h of exposure to various concentrations of 17β-estradiol and to model compounds was compared with a positive and a negative control, containing 1 nM 17β-estradiol and 0.1% ethanol, respectively. DEHP and 4-n-NP increased the frequency of proliferating MCF-7 cells in a dose-dependent manner. The lowest concentration that significantly increased the proliferation of MCF-7 cells was 10 μM for DEHP and 1 μM for 4-n-NP. The results showed that the assay is accurate and quick to perform. A survey was conducted among these physicians in order to investigate their opinion about and reported use of the drug letters in comparison with other drug-information sources. The majority of the responding physicians (response rate 68%) was found to read the drug letter frequently and evaluated the drug letter as a useful source of information about drugs, especially its section about the advantages and disadvantages of the new drug compared to other drugs. With respect to the different stages of the drug-adoption process, the drug letter was found to be the most frequently used information source at the decision stage. At the introduction stage the pharmaceutical industry representative seems to be the most frequently used source of information, while at the information stage it is the “Geneesmiddelenbulletin” (Drug Bulletin). The majority of the responding general practitioners reported to participate in local group meetings with pharmacists. However, in only 20% of these group meetings attention is given to the drug letter. Since it is known that written information has only a limited influence on the physician's behaviour, the influence of the “Betuwe Circulaire” may increase when attention is paid to it in the local contacts between pharmacists and physicians.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

(1.5 years of age) before feeding and at selected times up to 9 days after feeding. The feed contained 21.7% carbohydrate (65% digestibe) in the dry matter. The fish responded to feeding with an elevated plasma insulin level (p〈0.005) 0.5 h post-feeding, which may account for the unchanged plasma glucose levels. Twentyfour hours after feeding, plasma insulin level had returned to prefeeding levels, while 4–9 days after feeding, a significant reduction compared to pre-feeding levels was observed (p〈0.001). During this period plasma glucose levels remained unchanged. The corresponding plasma glucagon or GLP levels showed no significant elevation in response to starvation, the plasma GLP concentration was even significantly reduced on days 4–9 post-feeding (p〈0.01−0.001). Atlantic salmon,Salmo salar, (3.5 years of age) fed a calculated satiation ration (RL=100) throughout their lifetime had, in addition to a higher body weight, significantly higher plasma insulin (p〈0.005) glucagon (p〈0.0001) and GLP levels (p〈0.0001) than fish fed half the satiation ration.
