The Pearson walk model of a linear polymer with excluded volume is studied by analogy with a neighbor-avoiding walk on a lattice. The pivot algorithm is used to model the excluded volume directly, with the strength of interaction controlled by bead diameter. The excluded volume per bead is shown to be nonanalytic, with two distinct excluded volume regimes corresponding to geometrically different polymer models.

    Notes:
Like real polymer chains and unlike self-avoiding lattice walks, neighbor-avoiding lattice walks exhibit a reduction or mediation of the effective excluded-volume interaction, and thus merit study as a model of real polymers. For small excluded volume, we extend the perturbation series of Domb and Joyce to neighbor-avoiding walks. For large excluded volume we compute exactly the excluded volume per lattice site for short chains and estimate it by Monte Carlo for longer chains. We discuss the significance of chain stiffness for lattice models and suggest how the correct two-parameter function might be determined numerically.

    Notes:
Human activities have degraded riparian systems in numerous ways, including homogenization of the floodplain landscape and minimization of extreme flows. We analyzed the effects of changes in these and other factors for extinction–colonization dynamics of a threatened Bank Swallow population along the upper Sacramento River, California, U.S.A. We monitored Bank Swallow distributions along a 160-km stretch of the river from 1986–1992 and 1996–2003 and tested whether site extinctions and colonizations corresponded with changes in maximum river discharge, surrounding land cover, estimated colony size, temperature, and precipitation. Colonization probabilities increased with maximum discharge. Extinction probabilities decreased with proximity to the nearest grassland, decreased with colony size, and increased with maximum discharge. To explore the implications for restoration, we incorporated the statistically estimated effects of distance to grassland and maximum discharge into simple metapopulation models. Under current conditions, the Bank Swallow metapopulation appears to be in continued decline, although stable or increasing numbers cannot be ruled out with the existing data. Maximum likelihood parameters from these regression models suggest that the Sacramento River metapopulation could be restored to 45 colonies through moderate amounts of grassland restoration, large increases in discharge, or direct restoration of nesting habitat by removing approximately 10% of existing bank protection (riprap) from suitable areas. Our results highlight the importance of grassland restoration, mixed benefits of restoring high spring discharge, and the importance of within-colony dynamics as areas for future research.

Five commercially available immunoassay test kits (SYVA EMIT® d.a.uTM, SYVA EMIT® II assay, Abbott FPIA, Cozart Auto-Lyte® and Roche Abuscreen® OnlineTM, all used for the benzodiazepine group of drugs) were evaluated for their ability to detect flunitrazepam, its major urinary metabolite, 7-aminoflunitrazepam, and several other benzodiazepines at serial dilutions (final concentration 25–1000 ng/ml) in drug-free urine and in urines following oral administration of flunitrazepam (1–3 mg). For comparison, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was used to measure urinary levels of 7-aminoflunitrazepam. Levels of drug detected in the study were compared with the cross-reactivities presented by the manufacturers for each individual kit. One to three mg doses of flunitrazepam were taken by volunteers and levels excreted in urine analysed over several hours. A positive response was obtained in several samples from volunteers who had taken 2 mg or 3 mg doses, but not a 1 mg dose. Thirty-five clinical samples from the individuals suspected of benzodiazepine abuse were also examined. The results were not consistent among the kits evaluated. We conclude that the test kits evaluated in this study do not detect flunitrazepam reliably, due primarily to their poor sensitivities.

Pyostomatitis vegetans is a rare oral disorder often associated with gastrointestinal and/or cutaneous diseases and sometimes with other disorders. The association of pyostomatitis vegetans with inflammatory bowel disease, particularly ulcerative colitis, is well known and in most cases bowel disease precedes the onset of oral lesions by months or years. A peripheral eosinophilia has been observed in most reported cases. Pyostomatitis vegetans is characterized by erythematous, thickened oral mucosa with multiple pustules and superficial erosions. Histopathologically, it is characterized by intraepithelial and/or subepithelial abscesses containing large numbers of eosinophils. The pathogenesis is as yet unknown although immunological and microbial factors have been suggested as possible aetiological factors. Management of pyostomatitis vegetans consists mainly of immunosuppression using topical or systemic corticosteroids with medical and/or surgical treatment of any underlying inflammatory bowel disease.

Background:  Reported cases of syphilis in the United States, Europe and elsewhere are increasing in number. Clinical manifestations are protean, and oral biopsies may be taken where the diagnosis is unsuspected, but data on the histopathology of oral mucosal syphilis are sparse. Methods:  The histopathology of five oral lesions in patients with serologically proven syphilis was reviewed. Results:  There were two cases of primary syphilis, one secondary and two tertiary. Epithelial hyperplasia was present in three cases, and was pseudocarcinomatous in one case of primary syphilis, and psoriasiform in the secondary lesion, where heaped-up epithelium surrounded a defined crater covered by flatter epithelium. Plasma cell (primary and secondary disease) and granulomatous (tertiary) infiltrates were prominent. Other features observed were endarteritis (5/5), plasma cell neuritis (3/5) and spirochetes (4/5).Conclusions:  Although no single microscopic feature is specific, a diagnosis of syphilis should be considered where there is unusual epithelial hyperplasia, granulomatous or plasma cell-predominant chronic inflammation, endarteritis and neuritis.

The aim of this study was to determine whether the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, flurbiprofen, which has been shown to be an inhibitor of alveolar bone loss in human periodontal disease, is present in human crevicular fluid (CF) following oral dosing. A method is described whereby routine highperformance liquid chromatography is used to detect the drug in only 20 μ1 of CF. 5 volunteers abstained from toothbrushing for 21 days to induce experimental gingivitis and increase the resting flow of CF. 100 mg of flurbiprofen was taken by each volunteer on d 21-28. On d 21 and 28, serum and CF samples were taken prior to dosing and afterwards at 1, 2, 4 and 6 hours. On d 21 the mean peak concentration of the drug in serum was about 11 μg/ml and was found between 1–2 h after dosing. The respective values for CF (d 21) were 0.32 μg/ ml and 4 h. On d 28 flurbiprofen was detected in both fluids prior to dosing. The mean peak concentrations after dosing had increased to 13.13 μg/ml (serum) and 0.46 μg/ml (CF) although the levels of the drug in CF remained relatively constant throughout the observation period on d 28. The results indicate that flurbiprofen may be detected in human CF after oral administration and that the levels are in excess of the plasma level, which in beagles has been shown to inhibit alveolar bone loss in periodontal disease.

Despite the complex role of melanocytes in skin physiology, the function of oral mucosal melanocytes has attracted little research interest and remains largely unclear. This article reviews what is known about oral mucosal melanocytes and identifies areas of research that may shed further light on their role in oral biology.

The demonstration of S100 protein is used extensively for both research and diagnostic purposes in oral biology and pathology. This article reviews the structure and putative function of S100, technicalities of S100 immunohistochemistry, the cells of the oral and perioral tissues which express S100 and the possible significance of S100 expression in disease.

Tobacco and alcohol consumption are known predisposing factors to the development of oral cancer, though the mechanism by which they act is unclear. The density of Langerhans cells (LC) has been shown to decrease in the uterine cervix of smokers, possibly indicating reduced immune surveillance and increased risk of malignant change. This study examined biopsies of normal human lateral border of tongue taken from 41 necropsies whose histories of tobacco and alcohol consumption were known. LC were identified in fixed, wax-embedded sections using a monoclonal antibody to HLADR and an immunoperoxidase technique. The mean density of LC in smokers of the equivalent of 11 or more cigarettes daily was significantly higher than moderate and non-smokers when counts were expressed per mm epithelial surface and basement membrane length. There were no significant differences in LC numbers in relation to alcohol consumption, age or sex, but there was a significant interaction between tobacco and alcohol. The results suggest that either human oral LC respond to external toxins, or that physical changes in the epithelial barrier induced by such toxins necessitate the presence of more LC to maintain the integrity of the epithelium.
