Abstract Mössbauer and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of pigment gallstones were recorded at room temperature. Iron in the gallstones was found to be high-spin iron(III) with some or all of the iron being in a site of low symmetry, giving a g=4.28 signal in the EPR spectrum. Spectra of a sample of bilirubin indicated that the iron in the gallstones was not in the form of the iron-bilirubin complex. Elemental analysis also showed the presence of Cu, Mn, Zn, and Pb in addition to the Fe.
