The absolute Raman cross-section was measured for the πu mode of supercritical carbon dioxide at 50 and 75°C over five densities. These measurements clearly show that a dimeric species is responsible for the quadrupole induced dipole (QPID) Raman spectral activity of the πu(ν2) transition in carbon dioxide. This result is in accord with earlier predictions by Amos et al.
