    Abstract:
    Background In recent years, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Residency Committee for Ophthalmology formally recognized international health electives for credit. By engaging in international health experiences, ophthalmology residents achieve the anchors essential to the core competencies set forth by the ACGME. Objective To explore how the availability of international ophthalmology opportunities may influence applicants' selection of U.S. ophthalmology residency programs and to identify applicants' perceived goals and barriers of participation in international ophthalmology experiences. Methods For this cross-sectional study, an electronic invitation to a 22-item questionnaire was sent to all 413 applicants to the ophthalmology residency program at the Penn State Eye Center during the 2017 Match. Results Responses were received from 261 applicants, yielding a response rate of 63.2%. Nearly all respondents (95.4%) reported interest in participating in an international ophthalmology experience during residency training, with 52.1% of respondents reporting being “extremely interested.” More than half of respondents (53.6%) had previously participated in a healthcare-related experience in an international setting. The availability of international opportunities increased the interest of 67.4% of respondents when choosing which residency programs to apply to, and influenced 65.2% of respondents to rank a residency program higher, with the respondents with previous international experience more likely to be favorably influenced (p  〈  0.001, p = 0.04, respectively). The goal identified by the largest number of respondents as “most important” was to “offer service to the underserved” (59.0%). The most commonly identified anticipated barriers to participating in an international experience during residency training included concern about scheduling conflicts and call coverage (81.7%), followed by lack of funding (71.4%). Conclusion There is significant interest in international ophthalmology among ophthalmology residency applicants, and the availability of international opportunities during training may influence the applicants' selection of programs. Statistically significant differences were found among respondents with and without previous international healthcare-related experience. These findings warrant further investigation into how residency programs can best address this interest and integrate international ophthalmology experiences into the residency curriculum.

    Abstract:
    Major Central European’s contributions to international ophthalmology The fundamentals of modern ophthalmology were created in Europe in 18th and 19th centuries. At that time, Central European states were not independent, and majority were occupied by neighbouring countries, like Russia, Prussia and Austro‐Hungary. This political situation significantly limited the development of science and medicine in those countries. Scientific development was hindered by such factors as poor investment in research, decreased number of universities, emigration of some researchers due to political reasons or due to the lack of adequate academic background. In spite of numerous complications, many interesting discoveries and observations were made in Central Europe at that time, even though the origin of most of them is now forgotten. The aim of this study is to present some major achievements of important contributors to international ophthalmology originating from Central Europe, including Witelo, Purkinje, Szokalski, Wicherkiewicz, Galezowski, Borysiekiewicz, Goldzieher, Blaskovics, Imre Jr., Kettesy, Krwawicz, Wilczek, Wichterle and others.

    Abstract:
    Purpose Gałęzowski was one of the most distinguished Polish ophthalmologists of the 19th century. He was the author of hundreds of articles and 12 books, on nearly every aspect of ophthalmology, including his major interests in ophthalmoscopy, retinal chromatoscopy, treatment of glaucoma, cataract and retinal detachment. Despite his many activities, a high professional position in his times and an important influence on the European ophthalmology, his private life and ophthalmic achievements have not yet been studied and analysed in detail. Methods The original works and articles written by Gałezowski in Russian, Polish and French (courtesy of Dr. A. Franceschetti) were translated, analysed and summarised. The published information about his life was supplemented with information collected form Polish medical libraries, including Jagiellonian Library and French libraries, among them Polish Institute in Paris, Polish Libarary in Paris, and National French Library. The information collected was additionally verified by the grandson of Ksawery, Nicolas Gałęzowski. Results His major interests were focused in ophthalmoscopy and retinal detachment. Due to his co‐operation with Jean‐Martin Charcot at the Salpetriere, he gained a great deal of experience with neurological diseases and he became the pioneer of the use of ophthalmoscopy in the diagnosis of central nervous system diseases (cerebroscopy). He founded the first French monthly ophthalmic journal “Journal d’ophtalmologie” in 1872. Conclusion Gałęzowski did many pioneer studies in different fields of ophthalmology and certainly he was a great practitioner and tutor. His studies in ophthalmoscopy, retinal detachment and glaucoma surgery belong to the best of the 19th century ophthalmology.
