Published 1992Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7623Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: A novel "point-diffraction'' interferometer has been implemented on the Los Alamos solid fiber Z-pinch experiment. The laser beam is split into two legs after passing through the plasma. The reference leg is filtered with a pin-hole aperture and recombined with the other leg to form an interferogram. This allows compact mounting of the optics and relative ease of alignment. The Z-pinch experiment employs a pulsed-power generator that delivers up to 700 kA with a 100 ns rise time through a fiber of deuterium or deuterated polyethylene (CD2) that is 5-cm long and initially solid with radius r≈15 μm. The interferometer, using a Δt≈200 ps pulse from a Nd:YAG laser frequency doubled to λ=532 nm, measures the electron line density and, assuming azimuthal symmetry, the density as a function of radial and axial position. Calculations predict Faraday rotations of order π/2 for plasma and current densities that this experiment was designed to produce. The resulting periodic loss of fringes would provide the current density distribution.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1996Staff ViewISSN: 1089-7674Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: A dense Z-pinch formed by the electrical breakdown of solid CD2 fibers in an 800 kA, 100 ns risetime pulse generator has been studied with optical and radiation diagnostics. It has been found that, contrary to calculations based on classical joule heating of the plasma that predict approximate dynamic equilibrium, the pinch always expands explosively while displaying intense m=0 hydromagnetic instability activity. Excellent agreement with the observed expansion rate as well as with measured electron temperatures and neutron yield has been obtained by including in a simulation code the direct heating of ions by turbulence arising from instability growth. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1994Staff ViewISSN: 1365-2494Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionNotes: The effect of adding rolled barley on the ensiling characteristics and nutritive value of lucerne and corn (Zea mays) forage was studied using 19-1 plastic mini-silos. Other factors evaluated with lucerne were the effect of wilting and added lactic acid bacteria. Rolled barley was added at rates of 0, 50, 100 and 150gkg−1 (wet weight) to lucerne or corn forage. Lucerne was ensiled at 170–330 g kg−1 dry matter (DM) and lactic acid bacteria were applied at 105g−1 wet forage. Addition of rolled barley consistently improved the fermentation of lucerne by lowering the pH and decreasing the concentration of acetate and ammonia nitrogen. Wilting of lucerne had variable effects on fermentation in two experiments. The addition of lactic acid bacteria improved fermentation by decreasing the concentrations of acetate and ammonia nitrogen, improved the nutritive value by increasing the in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), and was associated with decreased amounts of lactic acid. Corn was ensiled at 250 g kg−1 DM, and added rolled barley had little effect on the fermentation of corn silage. The digestibility of all silages determined in vitro was improved by the addition of rolled barley.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1750-3841Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionProcess Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: Old-crop and spring lambs (n=140) were assigned to one of four treatments: (1) electrical stimulation (ES) immediately following exsanguination, (2) ES immediately following pelt removal, (3) ES immediately upon entering the cooler, and (4) not electrically stimulated (untreated controls). ES carcasses received 18 impulses of 550 volts (AC), 5 amps and 1.8 set duration with 1.8 set interval between impulses. At 24–28 hr postmortem, certain carcasses were fabricated to obtain wholesale cuts for use in vacuum packaging and storage studies and to obtain boneless loin chops for use in retail display studies. With one exception (legs from old-crop lambs), electrical stimulation had no effect on weight losses of vacuum packaged wholesale cuts during a 6-day storage interval. Electrical stimulation improved muscle color, decreased surface discoloration, and improved overall appearance of boneless loin chops from old-crop lambs during a 4-day retail display interval and did not detrimentally affect retail appearance of boneless loin chops from spring lambs. Time of application in the slaughter-dressing sequence of electrical stimulation had no effect on weight losses of wholesale cuts during storage and had little effect on appearance of retail cuts during display.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
