ISSN: 1573-0832Keywords: Deoxynivalenol ; Fumonisin B1 ; Zearalenone ; TLC ; HPLC ; ELISASource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyMedicineNotes: Abstract Thin layer chromatography (TLC) methods for identifying and quantifying deoxynivalenol (DON), fumonisin B1 (FB1) and zearalenone in grain samples were compared to immunoassay (ELISA) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods to determine the reliability of the less expensive TLC. There was a very good agreement between levels of DON measured by TLC and competitive-direct ELISA, and between levels of fumonisin B1 measured by TLC and HPLC, over a wide range of concentrations. Correlation coefficients (Pearson's) were 0.978, 0.914 and 0.953 for DON in maize, DON in wheat and FB1 in maize respectively. A lower correlation coefficient (r = 0.672) was obtained when zearalenone was quantified by TLC and HPLC. Possible reasons for this are discussed. A cost comparison of the various methods revealed that TLC was the least expensive for sample analysis. It is recommended that researchers choose which analytical method to use based upon individual considerations of cost and precision.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-1084Keywords: Scheie syndrome ; Mucopolysaccharidosis I ; Dysostosis multiplexSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract A 5-year-old boy presented with prominent chest, clavicles and scapulae. Restricted movements in his large joints and neck were noted. A skeletal survey showed changes of mild dysostosis multiplex. His mental development was normal. Biochemical studies were consistent with the clinical diagnosis of Scheie syndrome.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

When incorporated into artificial diets of neonates at 50 ppm, all compounds caused larval mortality as well as growth reduction and increased the development time of survivors in a concentration-dependent manner. Humilinolide C also reduced growth and survivorship at 5 ppm. Additional effects observed in many of the limonoid-treated groups included a significant delay in time to pupation and adult emergence. The compounds showed comparable activity to toosendanin, a commercial insecticide. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of the humilinolides to three human cell lines was low.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-1995Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: Electrical Engineering, Measurement and Control TechnologyNotes: Abstract Software agent technology will have a significant impact on the shape of the global information society in the next millennium. This branch of systems engineering is rapidly becoming a viable and exploitable technology where BT is well placed as both a potential user and provider of agent-based services and products. The highly interactive nature of multi-agent systems points to the need for consensus on agent interfaces in order to support interoperability between different agent systems. The completion and adoption of such a standard is a prerequisite to the commercialisation and successful exploitation of agent technology. This paper describes FIPA (Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents) and its organisation. It provides an overview and guide to the FIPA97 specification. It discusses how FIPA relates to other agent standards activities and concludes with FIPA's plans for 1998.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1435-165XKeywords: Postgraduate ; education ; Russia (or CIS or Former Soviet Union)Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract A two week course in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry was given in St. Petersburg as part of the partnership between the City's Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Service and Division of Child and Adolscent Psychiatry at Leicester University Medical School. In such a short course, it was necessary to focus on areas of particular importance to Russian practice. Areas chosen were: assessment and interviewing skills, psychosomatic concepts, mental retardation, suicide and self harm, attachment, behaviour therapy and adolescent problems. The course also offered practical demonstrations with Russian families. The response was favourable but assessment of how much the course added to knowledge was difficult.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
