Published 1998Staff ViewISSN: 1437-9813Keywords: Keywords Congenital neuroblastoma ; Dumbbell tumor ; Liver metastasis ; Spontaneous regressionSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract We report a patient with a congenital mediastinal dumbbell neuroblastoma (NB) presenting as respiratory distress at birth rather than a neurologic deficit. The tumor did not respond to low-dose chemotherapy, but radiotherapy and surgery were effective. The patient was observed postoperatively without further therapeutic intervention considering the favorable biologic factors despite the appearance of liver metastases, which ultimately regressed spontaneously. The authors believe that most congenital NBs have favorable outcomes with a possibility of spontaneous regression, and that an understanding of the biologic features of tumors is important to avoid overtreatment of lesions with a favorable prognosis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1997Staff ViewISSN: 1432-1076Keywords: Key words Hepatitis C virus ; Chronic hepatitis C ; Natural history ; Spontaneous remission ; ChildrenSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract The clinical course of 48 children with chronic hepatitis C (33 boys, 15 girls; mean age: 12.2 years) was monitored for more than 3 years to clarify its natural course. All patients were positive for the second-generation antibody to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) and for serum hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA. All but one patient had a history of blood transfusion. Serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) had been abnormal for more than 1.5 years. Spontaneous remission defined as a biochemical remission lasting more than 1 year in association with the disappearance of serum HCV RNA, occurred in 4 (8.3%), however, in 25%, HCV RNA was still detectable in the liver even after its disappearance from serum. In this patient, the level of antibody to HCV core antigen (anti-HCV core) did not decrease significantly and serum HCV RNA eventually reappeared. The serum titre of HCV RNA in the 4 children with spontaneous remission was lower than in the remaining 44 children. Spontaneous remission may occur in children with chronic hepatitis C in whom the serum titre of HCV RNA is low and serum level of anti-HCV core decreases significantly. Assessment of the intrahepatic HCV RNA is necessary to confirm complete remission. Conclusion A low serum titre of HCV RNA and a significant decrease in the serum titre of anti-HCV core were associated with spontaneous remission in children with chronic hepatitis C. Intrahepatic HCV RNA assessment is necessary to confirm complete remission.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1989Staff ViewISSN: 1432-1076Keywords: Fatal infectious mononucleosis ; Staphylococcal pyoderma ; ImmunodysregulationSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract We describe a 14-year-old girl with fatal infectious mononucleosis with high fever, pancytopenia, and multiple skin ulcers due toStaphylococcus aureus. Immunological studies revealed low serum IgM, low natural killer (NK) activity, and high CD4/CD8 ratio. Her father had also low NK activity and high CD4/CD8 ratio. It is suggested that she had a dominantly inherited immunodeficiency predisposing to severe Epstein-Barr virus infection.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Notes: Abstract A model of the Bauschinger effect in materials containing heterogeneities is developed using the theory of continuous dislocation distributions on a plane. The effect of work hardening is considered. Energy losses per stress cycle are calculated as a function of maximum stress and a comparison is made with the fatigue studies of Lazan.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1572-9540Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract A Fe−Si (6at%) single crystal with a (110) surface was studied by a Mossbauer spectroscopy as a function of the angle between a crystal axis 〈100〉 and the magnetization direction 〈hk1〉. The difference spectra reveal Si atoms give rise to a magnetic dipolar field, of which magnitude varies with the angle as expected for the Si atom in the 2nd neighbor site. The dipolar field was found to take place at the main lines of Mossbauer spectrum to reveal the Si atom in the 2nd neighbor site never reduces the hyperfine field at the Fe probe nuclei, which supports the earlier proposals by Cranshaw.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1572-9540Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract NMR-ON measurements have been performed for60CoFe−Si. The samples of Fe−Si (6 at. %) single crystal dish with the (110) surface were used. Rosonance measurements have been carried out with the magnetization direction along the 〈100〉 and the 〈111〉 axes. Five prominent resonances were found at 166, 162, 151, 147 and 135 Mllz. The resonance at 166 Mllz has been known to be due to60Co without neighbourt Si atoms. The resonances at 151 and 135 Mllz are due to60Co nuclei with one and two Si atom(s) in the 1st neighbour site, respectively. The resonances at 162 and 147 Mllz would be due to the contribution of the 3rd 〈111〉 and the 〈100〉 magnetization axes, the differences of the resonance width have been qualitatively explained using the dipolar field.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The results are compared with calculated spectra based on a point charge model of the EFG created by a vacancy at the site of the probe atom.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
