Previous reports of harmonically driven mode-locked semiconductor lasers have indicated that the intensity correlation between adjacent pulses has a contrast ratio of two, rather than three as expected for mode-locked pulses. We show that this reduced contrast ratio is a result of pulse instabilities in harmonically driven mode-locked lasers. By setting the rf drive frequency to the stable operating condition, stable pulses with a contrast ratio of three have been obtained.

We report a method that enables an external-cavity semiconductor laser to be actively mode locked at multiples of the radio frequency (rf) drive frequency. The key to this method is the choice of the relationship between the external cavity resonance frequency and the rf drive frequency. The repetition rate of the output pulses is the lowest common multiple of the external cavity resonance frequency and the rf modulation frequency. The method has been demonstrated in a laser with a cavity resonance frequency of 1 GHz; 17 GHz pulse streams were generated using rf drive frequencies of 8.49 and 5.67 GHz.

Abstract An 11-month-old girl was referred to our hospital because of nausea and poor physical activity. She had a 5-month history of infantile spasms, which were successfully treated with valproic acid (VPA) and vitamin B6. Laboratory studies revealed hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, mainly due to distal type renal tubular acidosis (RTA). Although a renal biopsy, performed 2 months after the onset of RTA, did not demonstrate tubulointerstitial lesions, her clinical course, in which administration of VPA led to an episode of RTA, with gradual subsidence on VPA removal, suggested that the probable causative agent of her distal type RTA was VPA. Although proximal type RTA associated with VPA administration has been reported, distal type is rarely seen. To our knowledge, a similar case has not been reported previously.

    Notes:
Abstract Simon's stochastic model is extended to take both ‘selective’ and ‘random’ factors in human behaviors into consideration. The resulting distribution function is of ‘non-steadystate’ type and approaches the Poisson distribution at the random limit while the Yule (or Zipf) distribution at the selective limit. A comparison of the theoretical distribution with an observed one for classification items indexed in a bibliorgraphic database is made. The results give some insights into statistical features of a class in which the total number of elements is fixed.
