Published 1987Staff ViewISSN: 1471-0528Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: To assess a policy of women holding and thus having constant access to their own obstetric records, 290 women attending a peripheral consultant clinic in Newbury, West Berkshire, were randomly allocated to hold either their full case notes, or the more usual co-operation card. Women holding their full records were significantly more likely to feel in control of their antenatal care (rate ratio 1·45; 95% confidence interval 1·08–1·95) and to feel it was easier to talk to doctors and midwives (rate ratio 1·73; 95% confidence interval 1·16-2·59). No other beneficial effects were detected. Asked about their preferences for any subsequent pregnancies, women holding their own records in the index pregnancy were more likely to say they would prefer to hold the same kind of record again in a subsequent pregnancy than were women holding a co-operation card (rate ratio 1·56; 95% confidence interval 1·34–1·81). There was no evidence of negative effects. In particular, women holding their case notes did not feel more anxious than co-operation card holders. The policy of women holding their notes resulted in savings in elerical time, without evidence of an increase in the rate of lost notes.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The plasma was produced by uniformly irradiating spherical glass microballoons coated with thin layers of titanium and parylene. The 24-beam Omega laser system produced short, 0.6 ns, and high intensity, 4×1014 W/cm,2 laser pulses at a wavelength of 351 nm. The measured wavelength for the 2p-3s Tixiii resonance lines had an average shift of +0.023 A(ring) relative to the Cvi and Tixx spectral lines. No shift was found between the Cvi, Tixix, and Tixx lines. The shift is attributed to a Doppler effect, resulting from a difference of (2.6±0.2)×107 cm/s in the expansion velocities of Tixix and Tixx ions compared to Tixiii ions.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

These measurements with XUV lines allowed a diagnosis of much lower temperatures in the heating front than had been previously measured. The OMEGA (24-beam, 351-nm) laser system at the University of Rochester was used to produce plasmas from glass microballoons coated with Al or Ti substrates and overcoated with a plastic ablator. Thermal transport was investigated by measuring the intensity of x-ray and XUV lines as a function of the thickness of the plastic overcoat. These measurements were then compared to the 1D hydrodynamic code lilac. Agreement between the hydrodynamic code and experiment could not be obtained with a reasonable value for the flux limiter ( f≤0.65). Consistent results were reached if nonuniform irradiation and flux inhibition is assumed. The measured burnthrough depths of around 9 μm are similar to previous measurements made with x-ray lines at fluxes below 1015 W/cm2. The determination of such parameters as the fuel and shell areal densities, the average ion temperature, and the impact of implosion nonuniformities in high-density target implosions present a strong challenge. We describe several approaches utilizing the self-generated neutrons to diagnose these conditions, including neutron spectrometry, neutron activation of tracer gas and shell materials, and neutron scattering techniques. Time-resolved spectroscopy of lines emitted by the fuel or shell elements can provide information about the time history of the density, temperature, and integrity of the target. We report on time-integrated and time-resolved x-ray measurements of compressed polymer shell targets filled with Ar, or mixtures of Ar/Kr, directly irradiated by the 24-beam 2-kJ, UV (351-nm) OMEGA laser. These include x-ray photography, time-resolved and spaced-resolved x-ray spectroscopy, and x-ray diode measurements. Picosecond x-ray spectroscopy of the K shell emission from Ar has been studied, and detailed modeling and Spark Broadening analysis of the H-like and He-like line emission made. The results are compared with predictions of hydrodynamics code simulations of the implosions. From this analysis, a consistent history of the density and temperature of the compressed target is inferred. At the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, our approach to recording fiducials is twofold. In addition to recording the x-ray emission on a bifurcated photocathode, we also streak the incident laser light at 351 nm, which is scattered from the target and an independent signal at 4ω0 (264 nm), which is derived by frequency quadrupling a tiny fraction of the OMEGA laser driver output. The signal at 4ω0 is transported through the vacuum wall to the streak camera photocathode via fiber optics. A 200-A(ring) aluminum layer on mica is utilized for the UV sensitive photocathode. Generally, several of these instruments are deployed simultaneously on a given experiment to furnish a comprehensive data set of the x-ray emission spectrum and target hydrodynamics. Of particular importance is the ability to do quantitative analysis with the data set. This allows meaningful comparisons to be made with simulations. The sophistication of the hydrodynamic and atomic physics codes is such that qualitative analysis is insufficient. Various simple parameters in these codes are bench-marked against experimental measurements before more detailed calculations are performed. As in all diagnostic systems the range of linear response must be well defined. In this article we will discuss some of the constraints inherent in streak camera systems and how they affect the acquisition and analysis of the experimental results. Examples illustrating our current capabilities for diagnosing experiments on the OMEGA laser fusion facility will be presented.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Collection onto metal surfaces following implosions performed on the OMEGA laser with 1–3 TW (1–2 kJ) of 0.35-μm light is consistent with an ion implantation mechanism. The dependence of the intrinsic collection efficiency on the energy fluence to the collector surface and its variation in implosions carried out under the same nominal conditions indicate ion energies extending to at least 0.1 MeV and energy distribution functions that are sensitive to the details of the implosion dynamics. Intrinsic sticking efficiencies approaching 0.5 can be obtained in the limit of low total energy fluence to the collector surface (≤0.1 J cm−2).Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In particular, measurements such as neutron imaging, burn history using a neutron-sensitive streak camera, and fuel ρr by both neutron activation and neutron spectroscopy could be more easily tested with these simple targets than high-density targets that initially are not expected to produce such high yields. Targets with nominal dimensions of 1000×2 μm which contained D-T at 12–14 atm were imploded with 18 kJ of 0.35-μm light from the 10-beam Nova system. For pulse widths of 1 ns in either converging or diverging geometry, fusion yields in excess of 1013 have been obtained. The yields are comparable to those predicted from numerous 1-D model calculations in spite of the asymmetric illumination geometry of the driver. The first method involves the recording of absorption lines formed in the target tamper, out of the continuum emitted by a hotter compressed core. This method is applied to ablatively imploded targets having a thin KCl signature layer. The tamper ρΔR is deduced from the area within the absorption lines, whereas the tamper temperature is deduced from the intensity distribution among absorption lines of adjacent charge states. In a second method, doubly diffracting crystals can give two-dimensional monochromatic images of thin signature layers in spherical targets. Such information is useful in studying stability and mixing. Experimental results relevant to these methods will be shown and the limitations on their application to laser-target experiments will be discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
