    We have developed and tested a multilayer mirror (MLM) polarimeter optimized for λ=304 Å using electron impact on helium. Specifically we present the first experimental results of the polarization of the extreme ultraviolet Lyman-α emission from He+ [He II (2p)2P°→(1s)2S] as a function of the electron impact energy for impact energies ranging from 150 to 980 eV. A major challenge to performing this measurement is the suppression of the dominant He I (1snp)1P°→(1s2)1S radiation originating from the excitation of helium. Excellent spectral selectivity has been achieved with a VYNS copolymer filter whose transmission ratio of He II to He I emission has been measured to be greater than 1200:1. Additionally, we have measured the instrumental polarization using two identical MLMs in a crossed polarizer configuration. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    The diversity and functional type of plants can affect the microbial biomass in the soil, its respiratory activity and the diversity of its bacterial population. We have studied these effects in microcosms of reconstituted limestone grassland containing (i) a 12-species mixture of graminoids and forbs, (ii) a monoculture of the sedge Carex flacca, (iii) a monoculture of the grass Festuca ovina, and (iv) similar soil without plants. Microbial biomass was significantly greater in soil under monocultures of F. ovina than in the other microcosms. Basal respiration was largest in the F. ovina and mixed-species treatments where values were more than double those in the C. flacca and bare soil microcosms. The basal respiration was strongly linearly related to plant productivity (r = 0.89). Analysis of the active bacterial population by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of 16S rRNA revealed its diversity to be significantly greater in the C. flacca and bare soil treatments than in the F. ovina or mixed-species microcosms. This suggests that the functional type of plants has a strong influence on the composition of the bacterial community. We hypothesize that the discriminating functional attribute leading to a reduction of bacterial diversity in these microcosms was the presence in the F. ovina and mixed-plant communities of an active arbuscular–mycorrhizal mycelium that is absent from bare soil and monocultures of C. flacca.

    New types of focusing optical devices based on glass-capillary converters (GCCs) for the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) region have been constructed and tested. The EUV spectra of He II (np-1s) line radiation have been recorded in the spectral region from 23.0 to 30.6 nm both with and without GCC. Experimentally an enhancement of EUV radiation by a factor of 4–5 has been demonstrated for a small solid angle of the detection system. Theoretically, a computer simulation has been performed producing an enhancement coefficient of about 30–50 for optimal conditions of such experiments. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    A prospective randomised double blind study was carried out to compare the use of epidural methadone, morphine and bupivacaine for pain relief after Caesarean section. The results indicate that methadone is the most effective agent with few side effects. Subsequently this method was used routinely for postoperative analgesia in all patients undergoing Caesarean section. A retrospective study of 178 patients having this method of analgesia was carried out and indicated that epidural methadone is an effective and safe method of postoperative pain relief.

    Background The influence of current levels of indoor fungi on asthma is a controversial issue that needs to be resolved in order to advise patients appropriately.Objective To assess the seasonal variation in indoor fungal levels and the impact of these levels on asthma among mould-sensitized individuals.Methods Thirty-five young adults with current asthma and sensitization to fungi were visited four times over 1 year. At each home visit a questionnaire was administered and samples of dust and air were collected. Participants also recorded information on symptoms, peak expiratory flows (PEF) and medication use. Dust samples were analysed for house dust mite allergen (Der p 1) and total fungal biomass (ergosterol). Total and genus-specific fungal propagules were identified in air samples. Seasonal variation in allergen levels and significant independent effects of fungal levels on peak flow variability (PFV) were identified by repeated measures analysis of variance.Results Significant seasonal variations were observed in viable airborne fungi, ergosterol levels in the floor dust and PFV. PFV correlated significantly with symptom scores and the dose of reliever medication. PFV was also significantly associated with smoking and visible mould. The association between visible mould and PFV was independent of season, smoking and the dose of reliever medication. However, there was no association between total fungi, specific fungi or ergosterol and PFV. Der p 1 levels had no significant influence on asthma, even in HDM-sensitized individuals.Conclusions Mouldy homes adversely influence asthma in asthmatics sensitized to fungi.

    A method was developed to isolate and quantify uranic acid(s) of alginate or pectin added at various concentrations to lean (5–7% crude fat) ground pork. The method used an Aminex HPX-87-H+ column, isocratic 0.009N H2SO4 eluent and ultraviolet detection. For regression equations derived from mean uranic acid concentrations to predict percentage of alginate or pectin, R2 values were 0.99 for total uranic acids (alginate) and 0.97 for galacturonic acid (pectin). Reproducibility was 84% for alginate and 94% for pectin contents. Recoveries were: alginate 85% and pectin 80%.

    Hereford yearling steers (N= 144) were alloted to one of three pasture systems: tall fescue, smooth bromegrass-red clover or orchardgrass-red clover. After the grazing period, steers were finished in drylot and then serially slaughtered at 0, 56, 84 and 112 days. Carcass quality grades and yield grade numbers increased when steers were fed grain up to 112 days. Tenderness of loin steaks increased up to 84 days, after which no improvements were observed. Sensory panel scores for grassy flavor of steaks and ground beef decreased up to 112 days. Fifty-three compounds were identified in the volatiles of melted subcutaneous fat by direct sampling-gas chromatography/mass spectro-metry. The major differences between volatiles from fat of forage-fed compared to grain-fed steers were the higher concentrations of 2,3-octanedione and various diterpenoids present in the samples of the forage-fed animals.

    Four processing procedures were compared as methods of reducing warmed-over flavor (WOF) of pork chops during frozen storage for 84 days, These procedures were (1) oven-broiled chops, (2) chops from loins precooked with no additives, (3) chops from loins cured with 0.5% salt and 40 ppm NaNO2 and precooked, and (4) chops from loins cured with 2% salt and 120 ppm NaNO2 and precooked. Samples were evaluated by the TBA test, Warner-Bratzler shear, hydroxyproline assay and by sensory analysis after frozen storage at -18°C. Chops from the three precooked treatments were more tender than oven-broiled chops. Nitrite inhibited WOF development of precooked chops during frozen storage and 40 ppm nitrite was nearly as effective as 120 ppm.
