We present some results on the influence of the annealing temperature (from 250 to 450 °C) on the optical and electrical properties of three groups of samples with different thicknesses ((approximately-equal-to)0.3, 0.6, and 1 μm, respectively). Sulfuration temperature has a clear influence on the optical absorption and electrical resistivity of the films, with some differences in their behavior depending on the film thickness. In light of the available present knowledge of pyrite thin films, interpretation of the obtained results is difficult, it suggests that the shape of the optical absorption curves (and their absorption edge) at low photon energies is determined by the density of point defects, which decreases on increasing the annealing temperature. On the other hand, the electrical resistivity seems to be influenced by both the film grain size and point defect density.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: FeS2 thin films were prepared by thermal sulfidation of iron layers evaporated on glass substrates. Experiments were carried out to optimize the sulfidation parameters. For this purpose, morphological, compositional, crystallographic, optical, and electrical properties of the produced films and their relation with the parameters involved in the sulfidation process (temperature, sulfur pressure) are presented. From x-ray spectra and energy dispersive analyses of x ray it is concluded that FeS2 starts to be formed at sulfidation temperatures about 200 °C. X-ray patterns show that crystallinity and grain size of the films improve with the sulfidation temperature with a "critical value'' which varies with the sulfur pressure. On the other hand, both the film resistivity and the optical absorption coefficient change abruptly at temperatures higher than 350 °C. Above 500 °C polycrystalline aggregates known as "framboidal pyrite'' are observed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The number of brain mast cells was found to change during ontogenic development following the same pattern as brain histamine (HA) levels. The calculated HA content of brain mast cells was close to the HA content of the crude nuclear fraction at every age studied. Since most of the brain HA in the newborn sediments with the crude nuclear fraction, these results suggest that the developmental pattern of brain HA reflects changes in the number of brain mast cells, that is, in the size of the mast cell HA pool. The HA content of the supernatant of the crude nuclear fraction corrected for mast cell HA contamination, on the other hand, follows a developmental pattern similar to that of other known neurotransmitters.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

We find that risk aversion indeed falls with income and wealth. Entrepreneurs are less risk averse than employees, civil servants are more risk averse than private sector employees, and women are more risk averse than men. A simple lottery question appears a promising survey instrument to explore risk attitude and its relation to personal characteristics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1089-7550Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) and electrolyte electroluminescence (EL) spectra of polycrystalline CdS samples, in air and in contact with aqueous electrolytes, have been studied as a function of the atmosphere and temperature of annealing, light excitation intensity and wavelength, applied bias, electrolyte composition, and photoetching treatments. Both luminescence spectra are characterized by two broad bands centered at about 770 and 920 nm, associated with a red (R) and an infrared (IR) emission, respectively. According to our experimental results, the R band can be attributed to radiative recombination between electrons trapped at sulfur vacancies, localized at about 0.79 eV below the bottom of the conduction band, and valence-band free holes. The IR emission, on the other hand, is associated with a radiative recombination process involving electrons trapped at sulfur vacancies and holes trapped at cadmium vacancies located at about 0.26 eV above the top of the valence band. The luminescence spectrum shape is shown to depend on the rate of hole injection into the semiconductor and on the concentration of cadmium and sulfur vacancies. From the analysis of the R and IR band intensities, in both PL and EL spectra, valuable information about the generation and spatial distribution of vacancies under different annealing treatments can be obtained. Such information is of interest for the fabrication of high-performance liquid-junction solar cells based on CdS polycrystalline electrodes.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

This observation led us to examine the expression of these proteins after transient ischaemic episodes in the gerbil. Animals were killed 2–28 days after ischaemia and APP were detected by immunocytochemistry at the light and electron microscopic levels with an antibody raised against the C-terminal region of these proteins. The gliotic reaction was also examined using glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) immunoreactivity. Two days after ischaemia, neuronal cell death was observed in the hippocampal CA1 region accompanied by astrocyte hypertrophy. These hypertrophic astrocytes were found to be GFAP positive but stained weakly for APP. Seven days after ischaemia both astrocyte hypertrophic and hyperplasia, with identified mitotic figures, were observed. These hyperplasic astrocytes were intensely stained by the APP antibody, and were observed up to 28 days after ischaemia. This shows that neuronal cell death produced by transient ischaemia is followed by an increased APP expression which appears to be associated with the hyperplasic astrocytes but not with the initial hypertrophy of this cell population. These results, when taken together with those obtained in other models of neuronal damage or death, clearly suggest that APP expression follows neuronal death and is associated with astrocyte proliferation.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
