Fatigue Behaviour of Cu-35%Ni-3.5%Cr after Different Heat TreatmentsCu-35%Ni-3.5%Cr has been developed as a substitute for the conventional alloy Cu-30%Ni for marine applications. The Cu-Ni-Cr system exhibits a stable miscibility gap which contains the alloy Cu-35%Ni-3.5%Cr. Therefore, Cu-35%Ni-3.5%Cr can decompose in a wide temperature range. The fatigue behaviour of Cu-35%Ni-3.5%Cr was investigated over a wide decomposition range from solution treated to overaged condition both in air and argon. The most important results will he presented here in a comprehensive form.
    Notes:

Summary. The dynamical behavior of the damped sine-Gordon equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary condition is studied. It is shown that the equation has an unbounded one-dimensional global attractor in a suitable functional space when the ``damping'' and the ``diffusing'' are not very small.

Abstract Titanium aluminide alloys were prepared from cold-extruded elemental Ti and Al powders with compositions ranging from 25 to 75 at % Al. The production route in this study includes four essential steps: mixing, precompaction, cold-extrusion and reaction treatment. During reaction treatment, the intermetallic phases Ti3Al, TiAl and TiAl3 are formed by interdiffusion of Ti and Al, and pore formation takes place because of the different diffusivities of Ti and Al. The processes of phase formation, as well as pore formation, were studied by means of calorimetric, dilatometric and metallographic methods. In order to obtain nearly fully dense specimens, the technique of hot isostatic pressing was applied. The sintering behaviour and microstructures of the prepared alloys are reported.

Abstract Processes for preparing TiAl/Mo and TiAl/NiAl composites are described and results of the investigation are reported. It was found that the hardness of the TiAl/NiAl composites was largely influenced by the amount of hard ternary phases formed through reactions between TiAl and NiAl. The possibility of ductilizing and toughening TiAl by introducing molybdenum as a ductile reinforcement has also been shown. For both composites, optimal process parameters still remain to be determined by further experiments to suppress the formation of hard ternary phases, which are believed to be detrimental to ductility and fracture toughness.

Abstract This paper presents a theoretical and experimental investigation into the oxidation reactions of Si3N4-bonded SiC ceramics. Such ceramics which contain a small amount of silicon offer increased oxidation and wear resistance and are widely used as lining refractories in blast furnaces. The thermodynamics of oxidation reactions were studied using the JANAF tables. The weight gain was measured using a thermogravimetric analysis technique to study the kinetics. The temperature range of oxidation measurements is from 1073 to 1573 K and the oxidation atmosphere is water vapour, pure CO and CO–CO2 gas mixtures with various CO-to-CO2 ratios. Thermodynamic simulations showed that the oxidation mechanism of Si3N4-bonded SiC ceramics is passive oxidation and all components contribute to the formation of a silica film. The activated energies of the reactions follow the sequence Si3N4〉SiC〉Si. The kinetic study revealed that the oxidation of Si3N4-bonded SiC ceramics occurred in a mixed regime controlled by both interface reaction and diffusion through the silica film. Under the atmosphere conditions prevailing in the blast furnace, this ceramic is predicted to be passively oxidized with the chemical reaction rate becoming more dominant as the CO concentration increases. © 1998 Chapman & Hall

    Notes:
Abstract La(0.57−2x/3)Sr x Li0.3TiO3 perovskites were synthesised using a conventional solid-state reaction. Large Sr2+ ions partially substituting for La3+ ions were found to disturb the cubic perovskite structure and cause the superstructure lines to gradually decrease in the x-ray diffraction patterns and almost disappear when x = 0.12. On the contrast, there still exist superstructure diffraction spots in the electron diffraction pattern on microdomain when x = 0.12. The lithium ion conductivities of the compounds were improved in the range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.08, which does not obey the principle of the carrier concentration. An expansion of the unit cell and the disordering of La3+ (Sr2+), Li+ ions and vacancies in A sites could be a mechanism for the enhancement of the conductivity with Sr2+ doping.

    Description / Table of Contents:
Qualitative and Quantitative Description of the Hardening of Iron during Tensile TestThe change of dislocation density as well as the formation of dislocation have been qualitatively and quantitatively investigated. The results obtained show that the hardening of iron during tensile test can be attributed to both the increase of dislocation density and the formation of dislocation cells. The increase of dislocation density plays a predominant roll at small deformations. With increasing deformation, the cell formation which acts like grain refining gains more and more significance. The effect of the cell formation should, therefore, be separately considered, perhaps as a kind of subgrain formation.
    Notes:
