We present results from numerical simulations of AlGaN/InGaN double-heterostructure light-emitting diodes. A highly convergent, fast, and memory efficient algorithm necessary for wide band-gap device simulation was developed and is described here. Charge carrier tunneling currents and a band to impurity recombination mechanism are included. The results compare favorably to experimental results. The results demonstrate that the saturation of power at high currents, the high rate of increase in currents at high voltages, and the reduced broadening of the optical emission spectrum at high biases, with only band-to-acceptor recombination occurring in the active region, are due to carriers leaving the active region by thermionic emission rather than recombining. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

We demonstrate low-loss optical mode-size tapers in InGaAsP/InP optical waveguides fabricated by selective organometallic chemical vapor deposition. The tapers increase the vertical mode size by ≈300%. Taper losses as low as 0.4 dB (on-chip, excluding coupling) were achieved, with 2.6 dB coupling loss to a flat-end, single-mode fiber at 1540 nm wavelength.

The impact of a heterogeneous within-crown light environment on carbon allocation was investigated on young walnut trees trained on two branches: one left in full sunlight, the other shaded until leaf fall resulting in 67% reduction in photosynthetically active radiation. In September, the two branches were separately labelled with 14CO2 and 13CO2, respectively, so that the photosynthates from each branch could be traced independently at the same time. Although some carbon movements could be detected within 5 d in both directions (including from the shaded branch to the sun branch), between-branch carbon movements were very limited: approximately 1% of the diurnal net assimilation of a branch. At this time of the year branch autonomy was nearly total, leading to increased relative respiratory losses and a moderate growth deficit in the shaded branch. The ratio of growth to reserve storage rate was only slightly affected, indicating that reserves acted not as a mere buffer for excess C but as an active sink for assimilates. In winter, branch autonomy was more questionable, as significant amounts of carbon were imported into both branches, possibly representing up to 10% of total branch reserves. Further within-plant carbon transfers occurred in spring, which totally abolished plant autonomy, as new shoots sprouted on each branch received significantly more C mobilized from tree-wide reserves than from local, mother-branch located reserves. This allowed great flexibility of tree response to environment changes at the yearly time scale. As phloem is considered not functional in winter, it is suggested that xylem is involved as the pathway for carbohydrate movements at this time of the year. This is in agreement with other results regarding sugar exchanges between the xylem vessels and the neighbouring reserve parenchyma tissues.

Sequence analysis of antibody variable (V) regions can provide an insight regarding whether B cells have gone through an antigen-driven process of affinity maturation. In this study, we analyzed 16 V-regions of immunoglobulin (Ig) κ light chain genes obtained from a cDNA library of a rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovial tissue. A salient feature of our results is the high frequency utilization of germline VκI family genes, especially the O2/O12 gene (38%). All κ V-regions showed extensive somatic hypermutation with 5.4% of an average mutation rate. Replacement to silent mutation (R/S) ratio in the complementarity determining region (CDR) was 〉 2.9 in 12 out of 16 clones, indicating that the majority of the RA synovial B cells had undergone affinity maturation. However, the four other clones showed R/S ratios of 〈 2.9 in the CDR despite a high mutation rate. In contrast to the previous reports, long CDR3 was not a characteristic feature of these clones. In summary, these data show the high frequency utilization of the germline O2/O12 gene and a high rate of mutation with an evidence of antigen selection in most of the Ig κ genes expressed in the RA synovium.

The effect of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-AA on the inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) was investigated using cultured fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) obtained from RA and OA patients as well as control nonarthritic (NA) individuals. PDGF-AA increased the mRNA and protein expressions of proinflammatory cytokines, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-8 in RA FLS. Biological activity of IL-1 in the culture supernatant of RA FLS was also increased by PDGF-AA stimulation. Interestingly, PDGF-AA synergized with tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α to upregulate the protein expressions of IL-1β and IL-8. PDGF-induced enhancement of the IL-1β and IL-8 mRNA expressions was also observed in OA FLS. However, the expression of these proinflammatory cytokines in NA FLS did not change by PDGF treatment, suggesting that the inflammatory condition might have modified the biological effects of PDGF. In accordance with the enhanced expression of inflammatory cytokines, the activity of nuclear factor κB was also induced in response to PDGF-AA in RA FLS. These results suggest that PDGF-AA plays an important role in the progression of RA inflammation, and inhibiting PDGF activity may be useful for the effective RA treatment.

A known factor that limits the performance of automotive front-end accessory serpentine belt drive is cracking of the elastomer located in the rib tip. In this paper, fracture experiments were conducted using single-edge notched tension (SENT) specimens to study the fracture behaviour of a belt rib compound. A finite-element modelling method utilizing singular elements for crack in rubber solid was proposed and implemented in both plane-stress and 3D solid models using ABAQUS. A newly developed neural-network-based model was used to represent a nonlinear elastic belt rib rubber compound. The crack finite-element model, along with the neural-network-based material model, was verified with analytical and experimental results. A global–local finite-element procedure was developed to evaluate the J-integral for mode-I through-the-thickness crack in V-ribbed belt rib. Effects of pre-crack length, pulley pre-load and backside pulley displacement were investigated.
