The problem is formulated to include a number of practical constraints and the technique applied to moderately large networks (50 nodes). The whiskers were found to contain discrete regions of high and low planar defect density. These regions of low defect density were identified as 3C beta-SiC, whereas the regions of high defect density were consistent with a mixture of SiC polytypes, with the 3C and the 6H polytypes being the most predominant as a result of the formation of a high density of microtwins on the (1 1 1) planes perpendicular to the 〈1 1 1〉 growth direction. A growth mechanism is suggested based on observations of (a) outer layers of SiC on vapour-liquid-solid catalysts and (b) C∶Si variations between the regions of high and low densities of planar defects. It appears that there is some degree of stoichiometric control over the microstructure of the SiC whiskers in that slight carbon enrichments seem to promote the growth of relatively defect-free regions of beta-SiC whiskers.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1995Staff ViewISSN: 1572-9540Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: PhysicsNotes: Abstract Using the 93.31 keV Mössbauer transition in67Zn we have investigated hyperfine interactions and lattice-dynamic effects of nanostructured hexagonal (wurtzite) ZnO. The nanocrystals with particle sizes between 3 and 30 ran were produced by a reactive-gas sublimation method and were subsequently compacted into solid bodies under external pressure. The nanocrystalline materials were used as sources in Mössbauer emission experiments. A drastic increase of the asymmetry parameter was found fromη=0 (single crystal) toη≈0.5 (nanostructured material). Our theoretical Hartree-Fock cluster calculations show that displacements of the Zn atoms off the hexagonal symmetry axis as small as 0.005 Å can lead to such enhancedη parameters. The Lamb-Mössbauer factorf drastically drops when the particle size is reduced below ∼ 10 nm. Samples of the pure elements Co, Pd; alloys of Y-12 at.% Fe, Al-7 at.% Ag and W-30 at.% Ga; and ZnO ceramic, were found to section successfully to varying degrees. Advantages of sections prepared through ultramicrotomy over ion beam methods include extensive electron-transparent regions of uniform thickness and absence of ion beam damage. Typical artefacts were observed (knife marks, tearing, pull-out, shear lamellae, section curling, and anodic dissolution) but did not impede TEM analysis significantly. A potentially important effect observed was that of a texture development upon sectioning of the Co and Pd samples.
