    A laboratory-scale study was conducted to evaluate various methods of removing surface moisture from grass during forage harvesting. This moisture originates from dew or rain deposits, and contributes directly to the production of silage effluent. Measurements were made to determine the quantity of surface moisture on unharvested grass and the removal efficiency that centrifuging, shaking, squeezing and blowing treatments might be expected to achieve. The absolute quantity of surface moisture on the samples, which included four varieties, was estimated by blotting. The results indicated that tall fescue retained 53% more surface moisture when left in swaths during prolonged wet weather compared with unmown crop. When the wet standing crop was mown, the brush mower conditioner removed 57% of its surface moisture.Centrifuging and blowing to achieve aerodynamic dispersion of surface moisture were found to be more effective than shaking and squeezing, but estimations of the likely complexity, size and cost of field equipment showed them to be unrealistic options at the farm scale. Italian ryegrass was found to release surface moisture slightly more readily than perennial ryegrass, tall fescue or Yorkshire fog.

    In an effort to develop a multidimensional theory of self-disclosure, the present research considered two dimensions of disclosure content—degree of personalness (intimacy) and valence (positiveness or negativeness)—as well as gender of the discloser, timing of disclosure in relationship development, and the recipient of disclosure. In Study I, the variables of personalness and valence were manipulated through the use of prototypical disclosure statements with subjects blocked by sex. Subjects were asked to use a scale indicating phases of relationship development to rate when they would likely disclose statements. The analysis revealed significant main effects for all three factors: personal-ness, valence, and gender, as well as a significant interaction between personalness and valence. In Study II, personalness and valence were again manipulated, along with blocking for sex. The variable of disclosure recipient (target) was manipulated by asking subjects to separately indicate whether or not they would disclose each statement to five targets: stranger, acquaintance, parent, friend, and spouse. The analysis revealed significant main effects for three factors: personalness, valence, and target. All possible interactions of these variables were also significant. Due to the many consistencies between the findings of these two studies and the many highly significant interactions, it was concluded that a multidimensional approach to the study of self-disclosure is both justified and required.

    Résumé L'action inhibitrice de l'hydroxyurée (HU) sur une synthèse de DNA peut être antagonisée par des déoxyribosides (dR). De même, un mélange de déoxyadénosine, de déoxyguanosine, et de déoxycytidine annule complètement l'action de l'acide oxanyl hydroxamique (OHA) et inverse, en partie, les effets de l'acide salicylhydroxamique (SHA) et de l'acide (dihydroxybenzoyl-2.3)-hydroxamique (DHB). Lorsqu'on ajoute de la thymidine à une solution de dR, le schéma général d'antagonisme est similaire. De plus, en présence des quatre dR, l'action de l'acétoxyoxamide (AOA) est en partie antagonisée. Il a été conclu que ces acides hydroxamiques, comme l'HU, interviennent, à un degré plus ou moins grand, avec réduction des ribosides.

    Abstract A simple and flexible distributed feedback dye laser source pumped by the harmonic of a mode-locked YAG laser is described. Measurements of dephasing times of isotopic and hot bands in CS2 liquid exploiting both the frequency and time-resolution of this source are reported.

    Abstract The coherent excitation of molecular vibrations in liquids via off-resonant stimulated Raman amplification is shown to consist of two parts with vastily different spectral and temporal properties. One component situated at the frequency differenceω L −eω S of the driving fields follows almost instantaneously the system response function. The second part at the eigenfrequency eω 0 carries information on the vibrational dephasing. Detecting both frequency components simultaneously by coherent anti-Stokes probe scattering a novel 2-channel method is demonstrated. The vibrational dephasing time of thev 3-mode of CH3I is directly measured to beT 2=2.6±0.15 ps. This result gives experimental support to the deconvolution techniques required in conventional spectroscopy.

L'activité de chacun de ces composés était plus grande que celle de l'hydroxyurée dans le même système d'essai. De ce fait, une évaluation plus poussée de ces 3 agents ainsi que d'autres acides hydroxamiques dans une série de systèmes d'essai sur les virus paraît clairement indiquée.

    Abstract. Severe left ventricular dilatation and dysfunction in children may be associated with poor outcome in as many as 45% of cases. The prognosis for children with poor left ventricular function or arrhythmias associated with septic shock may be better, however, this has been inadequately studied. We report the favorable outcome of three children who presented with Gram-positive sepsis and significant cardiovascular compromise—two with severely dilated, poorly contractile left ventricle, and one with mild left ventricular dysfunction and incessant, malignant, and rapid atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. Our experience with these patients shows that complete and rapid resolution of these complications may be achieved with aggressive therapy.

    Résumé Le superparasitisme des larves d'Epilachna varivestis Mulsant par l'hyménoptère parasite,Pediobius foveolatus (Crawford) se produit au laboratoire. CependantP. foveolatus évite les larves déjà parasitées à un degré directement en rapport avec le nombre de fois que les hôtes ont été initialement parasités. L'augmentation du rapport parasites-hôte accroît le pourcentage de mortalité de l'hôte et la mortalité la plus élevée a lieu à 15° 6 C pour un rapport parasite/hôte de 10∶10. Des températures plus fortes (22° et 28°C) et des rapports plus importants aboutissent à plus de larves parasitées mais beaucoup de parasites ne parviennent pas à quitter l'hôte lorsque le rapport parasite/hôte est le plus grand. L'élévation de la température accompagnée d'une augmentation de ce rapport favorise la production de mâles du parasite.

    Abstract Superparasitism ofEpilachna varivestis Mulsant larvae by the hymenopterous parasitoid,Pediobius foveolatus (Crawford), occurred under laboratory conditions. However,P. foveolatus avoided previously parasitized larvae in a manner which was directly related to the number of times host larvae were initially parasitized. Increasing the parasitoid-host ratio also increased percent host mortality and highest overall host mortality occurred at 15.6°C when the parasitoid-host ratio was 10∶10. Higher temperatures (22° and 28°C) and higher parasitoid-host ratios yielded higher numbers of parasitized larvae although a significant number of parasitoids failed to emerge at the highest parasitoid-host ratio. Higher temperatures along with increasing parasitoid-host ratios favored production of more male parasitoids.

    The problems of technique and equipment used in the crosslinking of polyethylene polymer are discussed. The practice of organosilicon chemistry for crosslinking of polyethylene chains is also considered. The use of a Cavity Transfer Mixer (CTM) for control of silane-based crosslinking is described and the properties of the resultant polymers are tested. Use of this crosslinking method via the CTM produces polyethylene with improved hot-water characteristics.
