Bolus injections of buprenorphine 60 μg in 10 ml or morphine 2 mg in 10 ml of normal saline were given on demand for the first 48 hours postoperatively. Both drugs produced significant reduction in pain scores as assessed by the linear visual analogue scale and both produced prolonged analgesia at this dosage, which could be extended by further ‘top-ups’. The authors conclude that, for postoperative epidural analgesia, buprenorphine may be the opiate of choice and the reasons for this are discussed.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

In order to obtain local interface data, it is convenient to use a focused acoustic source with lens axis at incident angle θ and point-receiver at specular reflection angle θ. By scanning this combination at various critical angles (θ=θcrit), interface waves are generated locally near the lens focus. These waves penetrate the solid to a depth of approximately one shear wavelength λ T and are modulated by discontinuities such as flaws, inclusions, and debonds that may be present there. A radiated longitudinal wave in water accompanies these modulated interface waves and carries information on subsurface flaws to the point-detector along the direction of a specularly reflected wave. By scanning the focus-receiver combination along the interface, the receiver output may be used to form images of local subsurface detail. We show that in anisotropic materials, such as crystals, there are generally two different θcrit where a radiating interface wave provides subsurface information. ISSN: 1432-1793Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyNotes: Abstract The effects of 2 organophosphorous insecticides, temephos (Abate®) and chlorpyrifos (Dursban®), on populations of the salt-marsh snail Melampus bidentatus Say (Basommatophora: Melampidae) were investigated in a series of field experiments. These toxicants were aerially applied to mosquito breeding areas in New Jersey salt marshes in the manner normally used in biting-fly control operations. No significant change in the population density of M. bidentatus was observed in response to multiple treatments of granular formulations of either temephos or chlorpyrifos. However, there was a highly significant (P〈0.01) depression in population density observed in the plot exposed to multiple treatments of a temephos emulsion. This depression was followed by a resurgence in density levels, beginning 3 weeks after the last treatment. The specific mechanism for thisperturbation is not known. However, it is hypothesized that it might involve some combination of indirect insecticide effects coupled with age-specific effects. Tests of age structure of the affected population using the chi-square distribution supported this hypothesis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
