High accuracy experimental results on the nonlinear dynamical behaviour of a dripping faucet are presented. The distribution functions for droplet sizes and drip intervals together with return maps are studied for various dripping rates. Increasing this control parameter, chaotic behaviour is obtained and discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Summary. Cervical swabs for isolation of C.trachomatis and serum for anti-chlamydial antibodies were taken from 252 pregnant women on their first visit to an urban antenatal clinic. Chlamydial infection was found in 18 (7%) women, and antibody at titres 〉l/32 in 48 (19%); of the 18 infected women only 10 (56%) showed antibody. The likelihood of infection could not have been predicted by urogenital symptoms, the social or medical history or serology. Hypertrophic cervical ectopy and mucopus were significantly more common in infected than in uninfected women but underestimate the true rate of infection. The consorts of 10 infected women had signs of non-gonococcal urethritis but were asymptomatic; C.trachomatis was isolated from the urethra of one man. The indications for routine screening of antenatal patients for chlamydial infections is discussed.

A polyclonal antiserum, prepared in a rabbit immunized with a mycelium extract of Phytophthora infestans, reacted in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with mycelial extracts of two Phytophthora species but not with those of 10 other micro-organisms found on potato. P. infestans mycelium in leaf tissue was readily detected by ELISA using either the plate-trapped antigen or F(ab')2 antibody-fragment techniques. The amount of mycelium in leaf extracts was estimated by comparing the values obtained in ELISA with those for known concentrations of P. infestans mycelium.

    Notes:
A rabbit was immunized with a homogenate of spore balls (cystosori) of Spongospora subterranea which also contained some potato tuber debris. The resultant polyclonal antiserum contained antibodies which reacted against extracts of spore balls and healthy tubers. Antibodies to the tuber debris were removed by incubating the blood serum with an extract from a S. subterranea-free tuber. In enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the γ-globulin fraction of the absorbed antiserum reacted with dilute tuber extracts containing the equivalent of as little as 0·08 spore balls per ml. The reaction with spore balls was inhibited in high concentrations of tuber sap. Extracts of peel from symptomless tubers which had been stored in contact with scabbed tubers also reacted with the γ-globulin, presumably because the symptomless tubers became contaminated with spore balls. However, spore balls in soil were only weakly detected when high numbers were present. The γ-globulin did not react with the plasmodial stage of the pathogen, or with 15 other micro-organisms tested, including resting spores of Plasmodiophora brassicae.

Four immunization routes were investigated to induce an immune response against three structurally different types of pneumoccoccal polysaccharide (PPS) in the rat. In particular, the contribution of the IgA isotype in these immune responses was studied. Six days after administration of PPS type 3, 4 or 14. the localization of specific antibody-containing cells (ACC) in different lymphoid tissues and the antibody titres in serum were studied. All four routes induced anti-PPS ACC in the spleen. After intraduodenal, intravenous and especially intraperitoneal administration of PPS, many IgA-specific anti-PPS ACC were also found in parathymic and mesenteric lymph nodes and in the lamina propria of intestinal tissue. Several anti-PPS ACC were found in Peyer's patches, located peripheral of the B-cell areas. The intratracheal immunization elicited only a local immune response, in bronchus-associated lymphoid tissues and paratracheal lymph nodes. The localization of these anti-PPS ACC was influenced by the route of immunization. After all four investigated routes, specific antibodies were found in serum against PPS. However, some remarkable differences between PPS-3, 4 and 14 were found in the magnitude of the immune response and the distribution of the isotypes. Both route of immunization and structure of the PPS have a profound influence on the immune responses in rats.

The immune response to pneumococcal polysaccharide type 14 (PPS-14), induced by native PPS-14 was compared with the response induced by PPS-14 conjugated with CRM197 (PPS-14-CRM197). In our animal model, immunization with PPS-14-CRM197 gave a significant enhancement of anti-PPS-14 serum titres for IgM and IgG. but not for IgA. Also an increase in total number of anti-PPS-14 antibody-secreting ceils was found. Using immunohistochemical techniques, a different distribution pattern of specific antibody-containing cells in spleen section after immunization with PPS-I4-CRM197 was observed. Furthermore, a higher number of IFN-γ producing cells was found after immunization with PPS-14-CRM197, as compared with immunization with PPS-14. This enhanced IFN-γ production may be the cause for enhanced IgG response observed after immunization with PPS-14-CRM197.The specific immune response was less affected by splenectomy in animals immunized with PPS-14-CRM197 than with PPS-14. However, an age-related response to the native as well as the conjugated form of the PPS-14 was observed, since no effect of conjugation with CRM197 was seen in the onset of the immune response to PPS-14 in young animals. In conclusion, our results affirm the hypothesis that conjugation of polysaccharides changes the characteristics of the antigen towards a thymus-dependent antigen.

Abstract This paper introduces the concept ofn-valued groups and studies their algebraic and topological properties. We explore a number of examples. An important class consists of those that we calln-coset groups; they arise as orbit spaces of groupsG modulo a group of automorphisms withn elements. However, there are many examples that do not arise from this construction. We see that the theory ofn-valued groups is distinct from that of groups with a given automorphism group. There are natural concepts of the action of ann-valued group on a space and of a representation in an algebra of operators. We introduce the (purely algebraic) notion of ann-Hopf algebra and show that the ring of functions on ann-valued group and, in the topological case, the cohomology has ann-Hopf algebra structure. The cohomology algebra of the classifying space of a compact Lie group admits the structure of ann-Hopf algebra, wheren is the order of the Weyl group; the homology with dual structure is also ann-Hopf algebra. In general the group ring of ann-valued group is not ann-Hopf algebra but it is for ann-coset group constructed from an abelian group. Using the properties ofn-Hopf algebras we show that certain spaces do not admit the structure of ann-valued group and that certain commutativen-valued groups do not arise by applying then-coset construction to any commutative group.
