The marine otter (Lutra felina) lives exclusively along exposed rocky shorelines on the South American Pacific coast from Peru (6°S), to Cape Horn, Chile (56°S), and Isla de los Estados, Argentina. L. felina diet and its relationship to prey availability and energy content was assessed by spraint and prey remains analysis, direct observation, and the use of crab pots and fish traps, at four sites on the Valdivian coast in the south of Chile, between June 1999 and June 2000. Based on spraints analysis, the diet was composed of 25 species; 52% (13/25) of the species identified were crustaceans, 40% (10/25) were fish, and 8% (2/25) were mollusks. Crustaceans were found in 78% of 475 spraints, 100% of 929 prey remains, and 90.8% of prey determined by direct observation, fish in 20% of spraints and 9.0% of prey determined by direct observation, and mollusks in 2% of spraints and 0.2% of prey determined by direct observation. Observed seasonal variation in prey availability was reflected in the otter diet. Fourteen prey species were trapped; 43% (6/14) were crustaceans and 57% (8/14) fish, crustaceans were 93% of 566 trapped individuals, fish 7%. L. felina showed opportunistic feeding behavior, selecting prey seasonally according to their availability rather than to their energy input.

We report on a 29-year-old woman suffering from hay fever due to grass and olive tree pollens. She developed recurrent pericarditis during her first course of immunotherapy with an alum-adsorbed pollen extract. A causal relationship was established between the allergen injections and the acute pericarditis episodes on two consecutive occasions, which presented with blood eosinophilia. Blood cultures and serological tests for microorganisms were negative. There were no signs of autoimmune disease or systemic vasculitis. To the best of our knowledge, allergen immunotherapy-induced pericarditis has not been previously reported.

Summary A multicomponent extraction/concentration procedure has been developed for the enrichment of PCBs, PCTs and aliphatic hydrocarbons (pristane, C18, C19, C20, C22, C24, C28, C32 and C36) in pork liver. These components of the enriched extract were then simultaneously determined by gas chromatography. Mean recoveries ranged from 81.5% for pristane to 93% for PCBs;CV% (0.9–6.7) indicated the method to be both precise and reproducible.

Four main causes of bruxism have been studied – high anxiety level, malocclusion, temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and oral habits. Effective dental treatment for this problem is unknown in children with primary teeth, although, high prevalence has been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of psychological techniques in children with bruxism. A total of 33 children, 3–6 years of age with normal occlusal features, without oral habits, rate in the Conners’ parent rating scales (CPRS) and more than 0.75% in Conners’ teacher rating scales (CTRS), and one or more temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders registered in the Bernal and Tsamtsouris examination, were selected from 188 children. Two psychological techniques, ’directed muscular relaxation’ and ‘competence reaction’, were applied for 6 months. The results were analysed with a Wilcoxon rank sum test. All patients reduced their anxiety level and TMJ disorders, with statistical significance (P 〈 0·05). The psychological techniques were effective in the reduction of signs of bruxism in children with primary teeth.

    Notes:
The efficacy and safety of famotidine and ranitidine in the treatment of active duodenal ulcer were compared in a multicentre, randomized, double-blind study. The study was carried out in five centres which included a total of 143 patients with endoscopically documented active duodenal ulcer. The patients received either famotidine (one tablet of 40 mg at night) or ranitidine (two tablets of 150 mg at night). Endoscopic examinations were performed at 4 and 6 weeks of active treatment. Daytime and nocturnal pain were also monitored, and the laboratory and clinical profiles evaluated. One hundred and thirty-three patients fulfilled the evaluation criteria (66 patients in the famotidine group and 67 in the ranitidine group). Healing rates at 4 or 6 weeks of treatment showed no significant differences between the famotidine and ranitidine groups. The healing rates were 80% at week 4 and 97% at week 6 in the famotidine group, and 77% at week 4 and 96% at week 6 in the ranitidine group. Similar results were observed in both treatment groups with regard to pain resolution, decrease in antacid intake and safety profile.
