Furthermore the uptake of GABA by synaptosomes was studied. Hepatic encephalopathy was associated with a marked decrease in the activity of GAB A-T. This decrease in activity was already apparent in galactosamine-treated rabbits before the onset of hepatic encephalopathy. Sera and serum ultrafiltrates of rabbits with hepatic encephalopathy but not of normal rabbits or of rabbits with uremic encephalopathy were shown to inhibit GABA-T activity in vitro. Cerebral GAD activity and synaptosomal GABA uptake in rabbits with hepatic encephalopathy and in untreated animals were not different. These later findings indicate that hepatic encephalopathy is not associated with alterations of presynaptic GABA nerve terminals in the central nervous system. The demonstration of a decrease in cortical GABA-T activity provides indirect evidence for decreased GABA turnover in the brains of rabbits with hepatic encephalopathy and thus is compatible with augmented GABA-ergic inhibitory neurotransmission contributing to the neural inhibition of hepatic encephalopathy.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1522-9602Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyMathematicsNotes: Abstract A stochastic model is developed for a compartment with a single time-dependent input, and generalized to include inputs from several sources. With the number of particles of a given molecular species in the compartment as the random variable, the mean, variance and third central moment of this variable are calculated from its generating function, and compared with previous results. The behavior of the calculated moments is discussed, and the possibility of applying the model to chemical and biological systems is considered.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1434-3916Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract A fistula between the ureter and the acetabular space developed in a woman 69 years of age after revision surgery for a total hip arthroplasty. Symptoms were intermittent macrohematuria and swelling of the leg. The diagnosis was confirmed by arthrography and an elevated creatinine level in the aspirated fluid. After nephroureterectomy, symptoms disappeared. We conclude that the differential diagnosis of persisting unusual symptoms after total hip replacement has to include a fistula between the total hip prosthesis and urinary tract, even in the absence of open sinuses.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-4838Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineTechnologyNotes: Stimulated whole saliva samples were collected from 30 healthy individuals and analysed with a cone and plate viscometer. On the basis of these dynamic viscosity measurements saliva from patients, who represented the mean value and two standard deviations above and below the mean value, were selected for frictional force testing. Four archwire/bracket couples (SS/SS, SS/PCA, β-Ti/SS, and β-Ti/PCA) were each tested in these three salivas as well as in the dry state a total of five times, each at five different normal loads. With two exceptions no significant differences were found between any of the three wet states for any couple studied. When the dry state was compared to any of the wet states, the SS archwire couples showed a singificant increase in frictional forces, while the β-Ti archwire couples showed a slight decrease in frictional forces, which was not statistically significant.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
