Published 1994Staff ViewISSN: 1750-3841Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionProcess Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: Aqueous extracts of potato peel waste were freeze-dried. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) of the freeze-dried extracts revealed that chlorogenic (50.31%), gallic (41.67%), protocatechuic (7.81%), and caffeic (0.21%) acids were the major phenolics. During 15 days storage of the freeze-dried extract, no degradation of phenolics occurred. After 4 days storage at 63°C, 5.00g of sunflower oil containing either the freeze-dried extract (200 ppm) or butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) (200 ppm) reached peroxide values (PV) of 37.38 and 37.47 meq kg-1 respectively. L-ascorbic acid-6-palmitate was the best antioxidant (PV= 10.65 meq kg-1) but the freeze-dried extract was as good as BHA.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Oxford, UK : Blackwell Publishing Ltd
Published 1999Staff ViewISSN: 1095-8649Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: BiologyNotes: Cichla temensis collected in Venezuela attained a mean standard length of 440 mm, and C. orinocensis and C. intermedia mean lengths of 309 and 321 mm, respectively. There was little evidence of size differences between sexes. Opaque zones on otoliths corresponded to the period of peak of reproductive activity and low fish body condition (K). When aggregated across sites, linear estimates for growth of fish 〉age I were 57·5, 27·6, and 19·6 mm year1 for C. temensis, C. orinocensis, and C. intermedia, respectively. Fish from the Cinaruco River appeared to spawn at age I, and prior to first maturation had grown 25, 21, and 23 mm month1, respectively, for C. temensis, C. orinocensis, and C. intermedia. There was little intersite variation in growth rates, and differences in sizes of conspecifics from different sizes were due to age differences. Cichla in captivity spawn several times per year. The present results indicate that the annual cycle or tropical wet/dry seasonality promotes reproductive seasonality in Cichla. The energetic cost of reproduction and brood defence probably constrains most individuals to one spawn per year. Conversely, populations living in relatively aseasonal reservoir environments may have several spawns per year, in which case growth zones on hard structures are difficult to interpret.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1998Staff ViewISSN: 1750-3841Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionProcess Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: Freeze-dried water extract of potato peels (pp), containing chlorogenic, caffeic, gallic, and protocatechuic acids, was tested for effectiveness as a natural antioxidant. The pp was prepared from peel waste of Russet Burbank potatoes. Safety concerns regarding the use of pp in foods were investigated. The pp was examined for mutagenic activity using the in vitro Salmonella typhimurium- Escherichia coli microsome assay and found to be nonmutagenic. Plate count of pp revealed 〈10 CFU/g. The antibacterial activity of the pp was species dependent. It was effective only at high concentration against gram negative and one gram positive bacteria but it was bacteriostatic.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1994Staff ViewISSN: 1750-3841Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionProcess Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: Phenolics were extracted from potato peel waste using water or methanol. Phenolic acids in the extracts were quantified by HPLC. The greatest amounts of phenolic acids resulted when potato homogenate was refluxed with water for 30 min. yielding a total concentration of 48 mg/100g. Four phenolic acids (chlorogenic. gallic, protocatechuic, and caffeic) were characterized as major components. Aqueous extracts were stored 20 days and after 7 days at 25°C exposed to light, chlorogenic acid had degraded to caffeic acid.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
