Publication Date: 2018-07-27Description: In this paper I examine one way in which psychoanalysis could contribute a natural ethics based on the inherent psychological development of a moral conscience. Psychoanalytic object-relations theories postulate the fundamental relational nature of human beings, and therefore the correlated concerns about the well-being of others. The notion of unconscious projective identification central to some theories provides an ethic of integration. Keywords: Psychology ; Psychologie ; Natural ethics; Splitting; Ethic of integration; Consent ; Ética natural; Splitting; Ética de integração; ConsentimentoType: journal article, Zeitschriftenartikel -

Publication Date: 2018-10-25Description: The energy crisis of the 1970s in the United States consisted of three separate but related problems in the oil, natural gas, and utility sectors of the energy economy. The OPEC price increases and the OAPEC embargo of 1973 merely exacerbated existing problems. This article traces these problems over several decades and their development into a crisis in the early 1970s.Keywords: Politikwissenschaft ; Geschichte ; History ; Political science ; energy history; 1970s ; Special areas of Departmental Policy ; General History ; spezielle Ressortpolitik ; allgemeine Geschichte ; electricity ; crude oil ; energy policy ; import ; energy supply ; natural gas ; energy industry ; crisis ; market ; United States of America ; Erdgas ; Erdöl ; Energieversorgung ; Krise ; Energiepolitik ; Markt ; USA ; Elektrizität ; Energiewirtschaft ; Import ; 30300 ; 10500 ; 29900Type: journal article, Zeitschriftenartikel -

ISSN: 1469-8986Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicinePsychologyNotes: Experiments were undertaken to define the relationships between body movements and changes in oxygen consumption rate (V̇O2) and pulse rate. Methods included the use of indirect calorimetry for determination of V̇O2, a bedspring transducer and multiple electromyographic leads for movements, electrocardiograms for pulse rate, and electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings for condition of wakefulness or stage of sleep. Major and minor movements were distinguishable from each other in wakeful subjects by their effects on V̇O2 and pulse rate. Both types of movements evoked shorter changes during sleep. The concurrence of muscle potential or artifact on the EEG leads and polygraphic deflection from the bedspring was found to be a reliable indicator of movements eliciting such changes. Movements in sleep which evoked measureable changes in V̇O2 were noted to involve a considerable proportion of total muscle mass. V̇O2 response to movements during sleep endured for 1.52 min (S.D. ± 0.60), compared to 3.34 min (S.D. ± 0.99) in wakeful subjects. Pulse rate response was 0.26 min (S.D. ± 0.13) in wakeful subjects and appeared to be far briefer during sleep.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1963Staff ViewISSN: 1750-3841Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Fishery, Domestic Science, NutritionProcess Engineering, Biotechnology, Nutrition TechnologyNotes: The gritty material obtained by filtering commercial maple sirup was analyzed to determine its composition and to relate its composition to the amount of sugar sand deposited to determine the factors responsible for the formation of sugar sand. The samples, taken over a two-year period, contained calcium, malic acid, and undetermined material (probably silica) as the major constituents. The calcium, malic acid, and calcium malate content gave highly significant positive correlations with the amount of sugar sand formed, whereas the percentage of undetermined material gave a negative correlation. There was also evidence that the malic acid content was more critical in the formation of sugar sand than the calcium content. Highly significant negative correlations were obtained between the percent sugar sand deposited and the iron, copper, and boron content. Further, these constituents also gave highly significant negative correlations when compared with the calcium content of the sugar sand. The presence of potassium, magnesium, and molybdenum appeared to have little effect on the formation of sugar sand. The nonvolatile organic acids present in sugar sand were determined by paper chromatography. Results showed that sugar sand contains malic, citric, succinic, fumaric, and three unidentified organic acids.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Compared with the initial drug-free baseline, the early drug period was characterized by an increase in REM percentage, REM density, and REM activity. During the drug maintenance period, the increase in REM phasic events was accompanied by an increase in total sleep. Severe insomnia was noted during the initial period of drug withdrawal. The absence of time lag between changes in drug administration schedule and the associated alterations in sleep patterns was in contrast with the time latency of the therapeutic response. This is probably an indication that the effects of this neuroleptic on sleep and on psychopathology are mediated by different mechanisms.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
