The amplitude of the vertical component of the magnetic field has been chosen for the interpretation. Curves of apparent conductivity vs. time, plotted during the off-time of the signal, show that layering is easily resolved, that resonance effects are present and that polarization effects are detectable for certain types of polarization.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

This pilot study aimed to determine temporal and spatial distributions of paramoebae species in the water column, using an immuno-dot blot technique. Water samples were collected from inside fish cages at various depths (0.5, 5.5 and 11.0 m) in both summer and winter, as well as various distances (0, 0.5, 240, 280, 750 and 1100 m) away from the sea cage and farming site. Paramoebae densities were estimated using the most probable number technique (MPN). Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, nitrite and nitrates, and bacterial counts were measured for each water sample. Data were analysed using a residual maximum likelihood test and significant associations between paramoebae densities and environmental factors were analysed. Results showed that densities were significantly higher in summer (P = 0.017), at 5.5 m depth (P = 0.029), and reduced to the lowest density at 1100 m away from the cage sites (P = 0.008). Bacterial counts, turbidity and temperature were found to be significantly associated with paramoebae densities.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-0894Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: GeosciencesPhysicsNotes: Abstract Evidence from barometric data in Japan, USSR, southern Europe, southern Africa, and South America shows that air pressure variations with period near 18.6-years can attain amplitudes as high as 0.9 mb, and are identified as induced by the luni-solar constituent tide M n (M for moon and n for nodal). Luni-solar waveforms commonly exhibit modulation effects due to the superposition of a longer period component with 180° changes in phase. Thus, the waveform amplitudes can be highly nonstationary. Pressure gradients at this period over subcontinental distances show that the amplitudes imply nonequilibrium conditions. A theoretical coupling mechanism between E-W and N-S wind systems and the Coriolis force is envoked to explain the sub-continental extent and the, sometimes abrupt, amplitude changes of the pressure systems over small distances.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The propositus presented at 3 years of age with episodes of seizures and stupor with hypoglycaemia, acidosis, and ketonuria. Urinary organic acid assays showed elevated malonic acid without elevation of methylmalonic acid. Cultured fibroblasts had normal malonyl-CoA decarboxylase activity. Treatment with frequent feedings of a low-fat diet high in medium-chain triglycerides resulted in normalization of clinical signs and a resolution of the malonic aciduria. Two full siblings of the propositus had died at a young age of undiagnosed metabolic and neurological disease. Urine organic acid assays were performed on other family members. A half-sister showed mild malonic aciduria and other organic acid changes similar to the propositus, while the mother and half-brother showed mildly elevated ketone bodies. This family suggests further genetic and clinical heterogeneity in the malonic acidurias.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-1793Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyNotes: Abstract This paper describes a flume tank in which the various physical and behavioural conditions encountered by swarming macroplankton can be manipulated, and a mathematical stereophotographic technique, for use in the calculation of the three-dimensional co-ordinates of individual organisms within the swarms. The mathematical model incorporates the Direct-Linear Transformation equation which describes the position of the object and its image in relation to the camera-perspective centre of the photographic system. Combining this equation with a modified light-ray tracement technique to solve for the passage of light through a three-media environment, the actual three-dimensional co-ordinates of the individual organisms and subsequently their inter-individual distances, bearings and angles of elevation may be derived. The distances between adjacent animals can be measured to an accuracy of 0.24 mm (SD=0.21) using this photogrammetric technique. The design of the flume tank allows for the manipulation of water current speed and flow patterns, substrate, and light intensity. Six species of mysid and one species of euphausiid have been induced to swarm in the flume tank. The conditions required to induce swarming and schooling in the laboratory are described. The inter-individual distances, bearings and angles of elevation have been calculated for Paramesopodopsis rufa, Anisomysis mixta australis, Australerythrops paradicei (Crustacea: Mysidacea) and Nyctiphanes australis (Crustacea: Euphausiacea) using the stereophotographic technique.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1432-1793Source: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: BiologyNotes: Abstract Numerous stranding events of the euphausiid Nyctiphanes australis Sars on the coast of south-east Tasmania during the winter months of 1984/1985 are documented. The krill were at a reproductive stage of their life cycle. Strandings almost always occurred on calm, sunny days on beaches with a northerly aspect. Typically, barometric pressure was greater than and wind speed was less than the monthly average. No significant differences were found between stranded euphausiids and those from surface swarms, and the relationship between the two forms of behaviour in this area is discussed. A new form of behaviour termed “matting” was observed, in which the euphausiids aggregate dorsal-side down on the substrate in shallow water. Matting usually occurs synchronously with stranding. Laboratory experiments showed that N. australis responds to changes in both the plane of polarization and intensity of light with behaviour typical of that observed in stranding and matting events. Light appears to be a key factor mediating these types of behaviour. Hypotheses for the relationship between stranding and matting are offered.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL:
