ISSN: 1089-7666Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: For time t¯〈0, viscous fluid is in slow flow through a long straight axially symmetric tube whose radius, a¯, varies slowly with axial distance, x¯. When t¯=0 the tube is impulsively rotated about its axis with angular velocity, Ω¯, at which angular speed it is thereafter maintained. During the transition from zero angular velocity, when t¯〈0, to solid body rotation, when t¯→∞, the flow in the tube can briefly exhibit striking physical behavior, markedly different from the flow in the stationary tube. We present a linearization of the Navier–Stokes equations, valid when the Blasius parameter ε, which governs the magnitude of the inertial forces, tends to zero and the swirl parameter, λ, which is the ratio of a representative tube wall velocity, Ω¯a¯0, to a representative axial velocity, tends to infinity, with the product ελ2≡Γ held fixed. An analytic solution suitable for computation and valid for suitably large t¯ is presented and streamlines are plotted for a typical diverging and a typical converging tube at time t¯=0.6a¯02/ν when Γ=40. The relevance of the results to the phenomenon of vortex breakdown in tubes is discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Published 1987Staff ViewISSN: 1471-0528Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: There were 66 974 births at the three largest Dublin maternity hospitals in the years 1980–1982. Data on numbers of spontaneous and elective births, birthweight and perinatal mortality were analysed by day of the week. Perinatal mortality rates were highest on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The rate on Sunday was close to average. The largest number of perinatal deaths per day occurred on Wednesdays and the smallest on Sundays. Significant variations in mortality rates and percentage low birthweight were found among the 19% of infants who were born electively, but not among those born after a spontaneous onset of labour. High-risk pregnancies, including many with intrauterine fetal death, were induced in large numbers from Tuesdays through Saturdays with a peak on Wednesdays. Low risk cases were induced mainly from Monday through Fridays with a peak on Fridays. The pattern of perinatal mortality through the week followed closely that of the risk status of pregnancies delivered electively. The results indicate that the pattern of perinatal mortality by day of the week of birth was determined by a highly organized weekly routine of selective elective delivery.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Ferritin concentration fell progressively to a low level in late pregnancy suggesting that the average iron store was inadequate to meet the demands of pregnancy and that dietary iron supplements were therefore required. There was no evidence that iron supplementation led to excessive iron stores.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Osteopoikilosis was found in two-thirds of the patients radiologically examined and all but two had skin involvement. The predominant clinical pattern consisted of grouped skin coloured papules and discs that were distributed asymmetrically and which usually had presented at an early age. The skin lesions showed the characteristic histological changes of juvenile elastoma which, it is suggested, is the specific dermatological abnormality of the Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1365-2230Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Tissue from twenty-five patients with mycosis fungoides and three patients with poikiloderma atrophicans vasculare was examined ultrastructurally. Characteristic abnormal lymphoid cells were conspicuous in all biopsies comprising 30–60% of the cutaneous infiltrate. These cells possessed irregular nuclear outlines presenting a spectrum from mild indentation to grossly cerebriform shapes. The other prominent cell type was the histiocyte which occasionally appeared abnormal. Bizarre histiocytic cells resembling the interdigitating reticulum cell of lymph node T cell areas were also observed. In the epidermal infiltrate, abnormal lymphoid cells were seen singly infiltrating between keratinocytes and less frequently in groups, forming Pautrier microabscesses, or in close apposition to histiocytes. Langerhans cells appeared in normal numbers and were usually isolated but were occasionally seen in contact with lymphoid cells.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

There was a significantly lower concentration of ferritin in cord serum when the maternal value was 10 44g/l or less. The maternal ferritin appeared to be lower in mothers who had three or more previous pregnancies or were socially deprived.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1471-0528Source: Blackwell Publishing Journal Backfiles 1879-2005Topics: MedicineNotes: Summary. The prevalence of inflammatory villous lesions was determined in a prospective study of 120 consecutive placentas. Cord blood IgM level was measured as an indicator of fetal intrauterine infection, and the birthweights of the infants were noted. Ten cases of villitis were found. Two infants had elevated cord blood IgM and one of them also had amniotic infection. As only one case of villitis had corroborative evidence of transplacental intrauterine infection, 90% of the lesions require an alternative explanation. The severity of the lesions correlated with the presence of low birthweight. The quality of the inflammatory infiltrate was also considered. Only one case included plasma cells; the remainder showed lymphohistiocytic infiltration. The case with plasmacytic infiltration was the one with elevated cord blood IgM. It is concluded that placental villitis is usually not an infective condition and its aetiology remains unknown.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

All 27 were forceps deliveries. The main conclusion is that serious injury to the forecoming head at birth is almost invariably a direct effect of forceps. The relevance of this conclusion to some aspects of contemporary obstetric practice is discussed briefly.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1077-3118Source: AIP Digital ArchiveTopics: PhysicsNotes: Abnormally high effective carrier lifetimes have been observed in multicrystalline silicon wafers using both transient and steady-state photoconductance techniques. A simple model based on the presence of trapping centers explains this phenomenon both qualitatively and quantitatively. By fitting this model to experimental data acquired with a quasi-steady-state photoconductance technique, it is possible to determine the trap density, trap energy, and the ratio between the mean-trapping time and mean-escape time. A correlation between trap density and dislocation density in the material has been found. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -
