The relationship between age and turnout for the newly enfranchised should resemble that for the previously enfranchised if life cycle forces dominate: turnout increasing with age until peaking in the middle years, then declining with old age. If experience with the vote dominates, the relationship of age to turnout should differ: with new electorates there should be a much smaller difference between the turnout of the young and the middle-aged, peak turnout should occur at an earlier age than for established electorates, drop-off among the elderly should be especially steep, and such differences between the electorates should decline over time after enfranchisement. The evidence examined for new electorates -data spanning 18 national elections in eight countries - shows that the same relationship between age and turnout characterizes new and established electorates. Lack of experience with the vote, or resistance to acquiring new attitudes and behaviour, does not seem to alter appreciably the relationship of age to turnout in new electorates. Implications of this finding for the development of democratic participation and socialization theories of adult change are considered.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

ISSN: 1573-2568Keywords: LACTULOSE ; SUGAR MALABSORPTION ; WEIGHT GAIN ; COLITIS ; CELL PROLIFERATION ; APOPTOSISSource: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000Topics: MedicineNotes: Abstract We sought to determine, in a piglet model, whether severe sugar malabsorption causes colonic injuryor inflammation. Twenty-four piglets were randomized toreceive either control formula (CON) or CON supplemented with lactulose (LAC) (N = 12 each group). Afterseven days, inflammation, apoptosis, and crypt cellproliferation were assessed in the proximal colon(cecum). Lactulose feeding caused persistent diarrhea. In both groups, breath H2concentration was low, suggesting no increasedfermentation in the LAC group. Weight gain/volumeformula intake was identical in the CON and LAC groups(0.09 ± 0.13 and 0.09 ± 0.11 g/ml) respectively. Injury to thecolon did not occur, but inflammation of the colon(scale 0-5) was greater in LAC (score of 1.5 ±1.38) than in CON (0.42 ± 0.79; P 〈 0.05).Cell proliferation at the basal 40% of the crypt was 92% increasedin CON (labeling index 22.8 ± 9.9 vs 11.9± 2.8; P 〈 0.05). We conclude that persistentfeeding during severe sugar malabsorption permits weightgain but may cause colitis.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

The assays involve spiking the samples with 2H- and/or 13-C-labeled internal standards and direct derivatization with 2,4-difluoroaniline, using 1,3-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide as a coupling agent. The assay can be used to determine the isotopic enrichment or mass isotopomer distribution of the fatty acids and of lactate. Blanks by ubiquitous formate, acetate and lactate are minimized by the one-step derivatization procedure without deproteinization, using reagents dissolved in hydrocarbons. The assays were applied to experiments conducted in live dogs, pigs and monkeys, and in perfused rat livers. These techniques, in conjunction with appropriate stable isotope models, can be used to study carbohydrate fermentation in humans, ruminants and non-ruminant mammals.Additional Material: 8 Ill.Type of Medium: Electronic ResourceURL: -

Publication Date: 2018-07-27Description: During the 1980s, Chinese policy elites underwent a process of complex learning in economic policy that resulted in a shift from a revolutionary to a techno-economic paradigm that greatly reduced the control of the Chinese Communist Party over the economy. Spillover from the sectoral paradigm shift affected other policy sectors, which forced policy elites to experiment with religious policies that would complement the new economic paradigm. This experimentation fostered the growth of a civil society that could assume the social responsibilities cast off by the reforming state-owned enterprises. However, the experimentation also empowered distributional coalitions such as the Falungong, which threatened the party's control. Policy elites thus implemented adaptations of religious policies formulated under the revolutionary paradigm. The study concludes that the current conflict between the Vatican and Beijing resembles an iterated prisoner's dilemma and that the conflict will continue until Chinese policy elites realize that the failure of religious policy adaptations threaten the long-term goals of the techno-economic paradigm. Keywords: Sociology & anthropology ; Political science ; Politikwissenschaft ; Soziologie, Anthropologie ; Social sciences; Catholic church; learning; Contemporary ; Religionssoziologie ; politische Willensbildung, politische Soziologie, politische Kultur ; Political Process, Elections, Political Sociology, Political Culture ; Sociology of Religion ; 20.
