    SUMMARY 1. Biological invasions often involve close taxonomic relatives either as native/invader pairs or as invader/invader pairs. Precise identification and differentiation of species is therefore of paramount importance to reconstruct the invasion history. Genetic studies are indispensable in the case of morphologically conservative taxonomic groups.2. We analysed the Pontocaspian freshwater amphipods Dikerogammarus that have successfully invaded the benthos of large Central European rivers. Taxonomic uncertainties were clarified by phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial 16S and COI genes. The three-way partitioning of allozyme genotypes in a syntopic population further corroborated the taxonomic status of the three species Dikerogammarus haemobaphes, D. villosus and D. bispinosus. Dikerogammarus bispinosus had been prior misidentified as a subspecies of D. villosus. The conspicuous colour types of D. villosus, however, appeared to be conspecific.3. The genetic identification of the previously more abundant D. haemobaphes individuals in old samples supported the ‘successive invasion wave’ hypothesis with D. haemobaphes as the first invader displaced by the second invader D. villosus. Dikerogammarus bispinosus could be a potential future invader.4. Haplotype differentiation was apparent between two invasion lines of D. haemobaphes, but the occurrence of a single widespread haplotype indicates genetic impoverishment during rapid colonisation.

    Abstract  The importance of neoangiogenesis for the progressive growth and viability of solid tumors is well established. Recently, there has been growing evidence that angiogenesis might also be important in hematological malignancies, but only few data are available. In this report, we have studied the impact of bone marrow microvessel density and survival in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). Immunohistochemical CD34 stained paraffin-embedded bone marrow biopsies of 44 patients with newly diagnosed MM were studied. Microvessels were counted in 400× magnification and the mean number of vessels per area in each sample was noted as the microvessel density (MVD). The median MVD was 48 vessels/mm2, the range was 0–125 vessels/mm2. Using a cut-off value of the median MVD in the Kaplan-Meier analysis, the median survival was 22.2 months in the group with the higher MVD and was not reached in the group with the lower MVD (P〈0.01). In a multivariate Cox regression analysis, using previously identified prognostic factors β2-microglobulin, C-reactive protein (CRP), and age, MVD remained significant as a prognostic factor (P〈0.03).

    Abstract  The application of glass in the microsystems technology becomes more and more important. Therefore, it is necessary to combine special microstructurable glasses with various other materials (e.g. joining with silicon by anodic bonding, joining with metals by electroforming, joining with polymers by glueing, joining with various other glasses by brazing or diffusion welding). In order to increase the use of glass in the microsystems technology especially four fields of research are important: –development of special glasses with various properties –technologies of microstructuring –technologies of joining –application These four topics are main research fields performed at the Institute of Glass/Ceramics-Technology and will be described in this paper.

    Summary The initial steps in N-glycosylation involve the synthesis of dolichol-linked Glc3Man9GlcNAc2 oligosaccharides and the transfer of these oligosaccharides to nascent polypeptides. These processes take place at the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and are conserved among eukaryotes. Once transferred to the protein the N-linked oligosaccharides are immediately trimmed by glycosidases located in the ER. This review focuses on the N-linked glycosylation pathway in the ER ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae andSchizosaccharomyces pombe. In particular, we outline how yeast cells ensure that only completely assembled lipid-linked oligosaccharides are transferred to nascent polypeptides. We will discuss the oligosaccharide trimming of glycoproteins with respect to glycoprotein quality control and degradation, focusing on the two different quality control mechanisms ofS. cerevisiae andS. pombe.
